How to Crochet an Easy Baby Blanket: Ideal for Beginners

Crochet Baby Blankets

Creating a cozy and beautiful crochet baby blanket is a fulfilling project, perfect for beginners looking to hone their skills.

Today, we’ll walk you through an easy pattern that results in a stunning blanket measuring 36.5 x 36.5 inches (92.5 x 92.5 cm) without the border, and with a 1-inch (2.5 cm) border.

This project, designed by Crochet Cabin, uses simple stitches and luxurious yarns to create a soft, comforting blanket for any baby. Let's get started!

Materials You Will Need

Before we dive into the pattern, let’s gather our supplies:

  • Yarn for the blanket: Bernat Baby Sport, DK weight, light, number 3. Color: Baby Ombre (166044).
  • Yarn for the border: James C. Brett Super Soft Baby Double Knit, DK weight, light, number 3. Color: BB4 (8313).
  • Crochet hook: 4.5 mm.
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

Blanket Specifications

For the blanket without the border:

  • Measurements: 36.5 in. x 36.5 in. (92.5 cm x 92.5 cm)
  • Yarn used: 16.15 oz (458 gr)

For the border:

  • Measurements: 1 in. (2.5 cm)
  • Yarn used: 1.83 oz (52 gr)

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Starting the Blanket

To begin, we need to create a foundation chain. The stitch pattern requires a multiple of 3 plus 2. For this blanket, we will chain 162.

  • Foundation Chain: Chain 162.

2. Row 1: Establishing the Pattern

  • Start in the second chain from the hook.
  • Work 1 single crochet (sc) into each chain across.
  • Turn your work.

3. Row 2 and Beyond: Building the Blanket

Now we will establish the pattern that will be repeated throughout the blanket.

  • Row 2: Chain 3 (counts as the first double crochet). Skip the next 2 stitches. In the next stitch, work 3 double crochets (dc). Repeat from * to the end of the row, ending with 1 dc in the last stitch. Turn your work.
  • Row 3: Chain 1 (does not count as a stitch). Work 1 sc into each stitch across, ending with 1 sc in the top of the turning chain. Turn your work.

Repeat Row 2 and Row 3 until your blanket measures 36.5 inches (92.5 cm) in length. This will give the blanket a textured, cozy feel.

Adding the Border

To give the blanket a polished look, we will add a simple border.

  • Round 1: With the border yarn (James C. Brett Super Soft Baby Double Knit), attach the yarn in any corner. Chain 1, work single crochet evenly around all four sides of the blanket, working 3 single crochets in each corner. Join with a slip stitch to the first single crochet.
  • Round 2: Chain 1, single crochet in each stitch around, working 3 single crochets in each corner stitch. Join with a slip stitch to the first single crochet.
  • Round 3: Repeat Round 2 if you want a slightly thicker border.

Finishing Touches

Once you’ve completed the border, weave in all loose ends with a yarn needle to give your blanket a clean finish.

Congratulations! You’ve completed your easy crochet baby blanket. This soft and cuddly blanket makes a wonderful gift for a newborn or a lovely addition to your own baby’s nursery.

The simple stitch pattern and beautiful yarn colors make this blanket both elegant and functional.
