How the Hexagon Is Made

1. Center: worked in the round with double crochet, then shaped into six sides with corner increases.
2. Color rounds: each new color is added for the next rounds, building out from the center.
3. Spike stitches: at the color changes, some stitches are worked into the round below, so the new color "spikes" into the previous one.
4. Last round: a neutral round frames the hexagon and makes joining easier.

What Is a Spike Stitch?

A spike stitch is a regular stitch worked into a stitch one or more rounds below instead of the round you are on. The long loop that results wraps over the previous color, creating a decorative line. It is an easy way to add a lot of interest without any complicated technique.
