Winter Wonder Cable Sweater: Top-Down Seamless Crochet Pullover (XS–5X)

Top-Down Seamless Crochet Sweater Unisex

The Winter Wonder Cable Pullover by Michelle Moore of MJ's Off The Hook Designs is a cozy, top-down crochet sweater that fits both men and women. It is worked seamlessly in the round in a raglan shape, and a simple two-stitch cable, separated by double crochet stitches, gives it a rich, knit-like texture. The sizes run from XS to 5X, and the video tutorial shows the whole sweater in size medium.

What You'll Need

Two-stitch cable texture of the Winter Wonder top-down crochet sweater by MJ's Off The Hook Designs

  • Worsted weight yarn (262 yd / 100 g per ball): 6 (6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 13, 14) balls. The sample uses a soft acrylic, alpaca and viscose blend from Mary Maxim.
  • 4 mm (G/6) and 4.5 mm (7) crochet hooks
  • Stitch markers, a tapestry needle and scissors

A yarn with a little alpaca adds warmth and a soft halo, while the flecks in the sample yarn give the cables a lovely tweed look.

How the Seamless Sweater Is Made

The video chapters follow the sweater from the neckline down:

  1. Collar (5:54): start with a ribbed collar.
  2. Body foundation and cable setup (8:55 and 11:58): set up the yoke and the two-stitch cable pattern.
  3. Yoke increases (16:57 to 23:48): increase at the four raglan lines until the yoke reaches the right size for your chest.
  4. Divide for body and sleeves (31:26): set the sleeve stitches aside and join the front and back under the arms.
  5. Body and ribbed band (36:10 and 40:27): work the body in the round and finish with a ribbed hem.
  6. Sleeves and cuffs (46:26 and 56:28): work each sleeve in the round from the armhole and add ribbed cuffs.

Why a Top-Down Sweater Is So Easy to Fit

Working the ribbed band of the seamless top-down crochet sweater

  • Try it on as you go. Because there are no seams, you can slip the yoke over your head to check the fit before dividing for the sleeves.
  • Adjust the length. Add or remove rounds in the body and sleeves for a longer or cropped fit.
  • No sewing at the end. You only weave in the ends.

Tips for Neat Cables

  • Check your gauge with the 4.5 mm hook before starting, so the sweater comes out the right size.
  • Mark the raglan lines with stitch markers and move them up every round.
  • Keep the cables relaxed. Pulling them too tight makes the fabric pucker.
  • Block gently with steam to even out the cables without flattening them.
