Effective Yoga Stretch for Sciatica

If you have sciatica, you know it is a real headache, both literally and figuratively. In fact, affected areas can include the buttocks, legs, and back, and symptoms can include weakness, numbness, tingling, and burning, as well as moderate to extreme pain.

This is because the source of the discomfort is irritation of the body's longest nerves, the sciatic nerves, which run bilaterally from the base of the spine, through the buttocks, and down the back of each leg.

Your symptoms may only be present on one side of your back or leg, as there is a nerve on each side of the body.

Severe sciatica can negatively affect your quality of life, making it uncomfortable to walk or sit. Because the pain is caused by a nerve, yoga poses can provide relief by stretching the surrounding muscles.

However, yoga may not be a suitable treatment for all causes of sciatica, so be sure to consult a doctor before proceeding.

There are many scenarios that can cause sciatica, two of the most common are piriformis syndrome and herniated disc. If your sciatic nerve is aggravated by a piriformis pull, yoga is a great remedy.

There are also several yoga positions that physical therapists use to relieve sciatica caused by a herniated disc. In some cases, hamstring stretches are also recommended.

Below you will find examples of each of these three types of poses. If you find relief from specific stretches, do it regularly to help prevent your sciatica from coming back.

Pigeon Pose - Eka Pada Rajakapotasana (Prep)

If you have good mobility, you can switch to this version of the pigeon pose. Place a folded blanket under your butt on the side of your front leg for support.

Stand with your left knee outside your right wrist and your left shin as parallel to the front of the mat as possible. Don't worry if you are not close to parallel.

Try not to let your butt slide to the left.

Lean forward with your left leg if it feels good. Repeat with the right leg forward.
