How to Make Your Yoga Mat Last Longer

When it comes to the longevity of a yoga mat, giving it a little extra love can make all the difference.

All rugs come with care and cleaning instructions, so be sure to read them before using any product on the carpet.

A good rule of thumb is to clean or wipe the carpet after each use. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, if you are using a shared mat in a studio or gym, cleaning after each use is critical.

Dilg says these tips will help extend the life of your carpet:

Practice with clean hands and feet.

Spray and clean the mat between workouts with a little essential oil diluted in water or a mat wash. Many studios clean rugs with a mixture of distilled water, white vinegar, and an essential oil like tea tree oil.

Keep your rug out of direct sunlight and let it dry after a deep sweat.

Combine your carpet with a carpet towel to protect the surface of the carpet. Towels can also increase thickness and stickiness and are easy to clean after a particularly sweaty practice.

DIY Yoga Mat Cleaner

For household cleaning, Paternotte uses a blend of essential oils with antibacterial properties and witch hazel (or alcohol) to clean the yoga mats.

You can test it at home by mixing the following ingredients in a 16-ounce spray bottle:

3/4 cup distilled or spring water
1/4 cup witch hazel
15 drops of tea tree oil
10 drops of essential oil of your choice
Please note that natural rubber mats should only be cleaned with water.
