What Is a Juice Cleanse?

A juice cleanse, also known as a juice fasting, is a detox diet that involves consuming fruit and vegetable juices (and usually nothing else) for a short period of time, usually one to three days.

Proponents believe that drinking juice floods the body with healing nutrients while eliminating toxins and waste.

It is also believed to support the body's natural detoxification processes by removing sugar from the diet, caffeine, refined foods, and other substances that can deplete energy.

However, there is a lack of research to back up these claims1 and any weight lost during a juice cleanse is likely to be regained once normal eating habits are resumed.

What can you eat

Raw (unpasteurized) organic juice is the main component of a juice cleanse. It can also be consumed at room temperature or warm water between each juice or meal to promote elimination.

You can include smoothies and some healthy foods or substitute those that require more calories. Some people may opt for only raw or vegan foods, while others may eat gluten-free meals and snacks.

A typical cleaning consists of three steps:

Preparation: Three to five days before cleansing, gradually eliminate coffee, refined sugar, meat, dairy, wheat, alcohol, and nicotine to reduce headaches, cravings, and other withdrawal symptoms during Cleaning. Increase your intake of fresh vegetables, fruits, and fluids.

Cleanse - For one to three actual cleanse days, drink at least 32 ounces of juice or smoothie a day. At least half should be green vegetable juice. If hunger is persistent or uncomfortable, a vegetable broth or a small snack such as carrots, celery, a salad, or a piece of fruit is usually suggested.

After cleansing: eat light food for a few days, gradually adding food over several days.

What you need to know

Proponents of juicing cleanse claim that nutrients, phytochemicals, and antioxidants are more easily absorbed by the body in liquid form. However, the research on the bioavailability of raw juices versus whole fruits or vegetables is mixed.

To optimize nutrient absorption, advocates recommend drinking the juice slowly rather than swallowing it. The juice is generally consumed a few hours apart, with the last drink of the day at least three hours before bedtime. A schedule can look like this:

Upon awakening: warm water with a little fresh lemon juice.
8 am to 9 am: juice, such as green vegetable juice
10:30 to 11:30: juice (or smoothie / food cleaning)
1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.: juice (or shake / food cleaning)
3:00 pm to 4:00 pm: juice such as beets, carrots and apple juice
5:00 pm to 6:00 pm: juice (or shake / food cleaning)
6:00 p.m. M. At 8:00 p. M .: Smoothie or "milk" of almonds or cashews
