Why Is It Important To Move Around During Your Work Day?

Getting enough movement during the week, if you have a sedentary job, can be quite a challenge. Research shows that the average person takes just over 5,000 steps a day, with some reports indicating that the average is as low as 3,000.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that adults get a minimum of 150 minutes of moderate cardiovascular exercise or 75 minutes of high intensity cardiovascular exercise (or an equivalent combination of the two), as well as 2 days resistance training. he targeted each major muscle group each week.

If you're only taking 5,000 steps a day, chances are you're not meeting these goals.

The importance of movement

A large part of the energy you burn during the day comes from a type of activity called non-exercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT). NEAT helps maintain a balance between energy intake and production, which is vital to maintaining a healthy weight. Research shows that NEAT accounts for 6-10% of total daily energy expenditure (TDEE) in sedentary individuals and 50% or more in those who are very active during the day. Of course, NEAT is a vital component in creating a healthy energy balance.

With sedentary jobs and lifestyles, NEAT is usually quite low. Even if you go to the gym several times a week, you may not be moving enough to keep your weight in a healthy range. A 2018 national survey found that 57% of respondents believed they were overweight.

Forty-five percent of those surveyed thought they gained weight at their current job and 26% reported a weight gain of more than 5 pounds. Another 11% said they gained more than 20 pounds. Weight gain and a sedentary lifestyle can contribute to health problems like diabetes, heart disease, heart failure, strokes, some cancers, and worse mental health outcomes.

The good news is that adding more movement to your day can counteract these effects, and it doesn't have to be complicated.

For example, an American Heart Association study followed 11,000 middle-aged Americans for 6 years. The researchers found that study participants who completed 30 minutes of walking four times a week had a significantly lower risk of heart failure than those who did not.

Regular movement can also improve symptoms of anxiety and depression, improve your mood, and help you feel more balanced.
