Tips On Growing and Caring for Miltoniopsis Pansy Orchids

The Miltoniopsis Pansy orchid is possibly one of the friendliest looking orchids you can grow. Its bright open flower resembles a face, as do the pansies that gave it its name.

Its rounded, velvety petals are flat, in colors ranging from white to pink to red, often with contrasting cascading lines radiating outward from the center of the flower. These flowers, also known as Miltonia orchids, originated in the cloud forests of Brazil and grew into hybrid plants with attractive foliage and bright flowers.

How to grow Pansy Orchid

Growing the pansy orchid is primarily a matter of changing the plant's environment to more closely resemble the growth of its ancestors, with temperatures that are not too hot during the day and plenty of humidity to stimulate flower growth.

Study its habits throughout the year and you will learn how to grow a Miltonia orchid. These plants bloom in early spring and the flowers last up to five weeks in most cases. Some hardy varieties will bloom again in the fall, giving you twice the color each year.

The tall stems produce up to ten flowers and each flower can grow 4 inches (10 cm) in diameter. Pansy orchids do not bloom if they get too hot or dry out. They are very demanding when it comes to living in a certain environment and will not thrive unless you give them the temperature and humidity they need.

How to care for a Miltoniopsis orchid plant

Miltoniopsis orchid care begins with giving the plant the right home. Its roots are very sensitive to salts and other chemical fertilizers, so it will need a fresh planting medium that allows good drainage.

Fir bark, sphagnum moss, or a mixture of the two make good homes for these plants. The medium breaks down and begins composting very soon, so re-plan your plant once a year, right after it has bloomed.

Watering is an important part of caring for thought orchids. As they need to have clean roots free of deposits, deep watering is necessary.

Place the vase in the sink and run warm water over the planting medium until it drains from the bottom of the pot. Leave the pot in the sink until the excess water drains to the bottom. Give your pansy orchid this watering treatment once a week to ensure the right amount of moisture.

All plants need food, but these orchids do best with a very small amount. Use 10-10-10 fertilizer and dilute to a quarter of the concentration. Use this solution once every two weeks and only when the plant is growing new leaves or stems.
