Prices for home plants can range from double-digit lows to more than a million. Yes, a million. But why are some indoor plants so expensive?
Well, actors like rarity, beauty, reproduction and propagation all play a huge role.
Gardening activities have become increasingly popular in recent decades among younger generations and lately, there has been a "plant boom." Consequently, the desire for rare and attractive species is also growing.

As we take a closer look at the 21st-century boom, these are some of the most expensive houseplants.
Ripe Violin Fig Leaf ($ 80 to $ 300)
Able to grow up to 15 meters in tropical forests, the fig tree (Ficus lyrata) grows up to 3 meters in suitable indoor conditions.
Its bold foliage is prized by many interior designers and has become the "in" plant for the past decade. The demand drove the price up.
Plants with violin leaves are especially sensitive to air quality. They don't like dry air or drafts, nor do they respond well to too much or too little sun, the list goes on.
Variegated Monstera ($ 700 to $ 5000)
Variegated Monstera or 'Swiss Cheese Factory', like the delicious M. pictured above, can sell for up to $ 5,000.
A rare M. adansonii sold for $ 700, and M. aurea sold for $ 3,726 on the popular Trade Me auction site. Loved in New Zealand and other parts of the world, the variegated Monstera is easily one of the most popular plants in the past year.
However, the slow rate of propagation of the plant makes it very rare.
Hoya carnosa 'compact' ($ 40 to $ 6,500)
Another plant with a unique variation, the compact Hoya carnosa 'Hindu Rope' became the most expensive houseplant ever sold on Trade Me in June 2020.
The site member sold it for $ 6,500. This established plant had a cream / yellow color variation within the leaf.
Philodendron Minima ($ 50 to $ 8,150)
The common name of the tropical Rhaphidophora Tetrasperma is Philodendron Minima. It is also known as 'Mini Monstera' or 'Piccolo'.
What makes this sale even more surprising is that the small lows only had four sheets. Sold modestly in a six-inch black plastic pot, the intrigue arose as a result of the description, which featured the plant as "very rare" and "with an impressive yellow variation on each leaf."
Shenzhen Nongke Orchid (up to $ 200,000)
The orchid is completely man-made. For eight years, scientists have worked hard to cultivate this flower. Plant lovers now exercise a similar level of patience when growing this orchid, as it can take four to five years to flower.
Finally, the flowers dazzle the senses with a particular aesthetic and fragrance that few will experience. Precious specimens are auctioned for up to $ 200,000.
Old Pine Bonsaii ($ 50 to $ 1.3 million)
Bonsai attract the attention of plant lovers looking for a unique indoor species.
The most expensive bonsai is a century-old white pine, sold for 100 million yen (about $ 1.3 million) at the 11th Asia-Pacific Bonsai and Suiseki Convention and Exhibition in Takamatsu, Kagawa, Japan.
