Difference Between a Double Bed and a Queen Bed

Beds come in different sizes. This is nothing new to anyone, although few of us know what the sizes really mean. Single beds are thin, we have it. And the king size beds are the really wide ones.

But double beds and queen beds? We know they are bigger than twins and smaller than kings, but our knowledge stops there.

If someone asked us to define the precise difference between them, we probably couldn't. Ultimately, however, there really is a difference between double beds and queen beds. In fact, there are some differences.

For starters, queen beds are 6 inches wider than double beds. While double beds are 54 inches wide, queen beds are 60 inches wide.

Queen size beds are also 12 cm longer than double beds. While double beds are 75 inches long, queen beds are 80 inches long. These numbers may not seem large, but anyone who has shared a bed knows the difference a square foot of space can make.

What is a double bed?

A double bed, also known as a full bed (yes, they are the same), is 54 inches wide and 75 inches long. This makes it 15 inches wider than a single bed, although they are both the same length.

Since double beds are wider than single beds, many people think that they are suitable for couples. But let's do some math here. A single bed is 99 cm wide.

This means that when you lie down on a single bed, you have three feet to move around, and even that can feel a bit tense at times. A double bed is 54 inches wide.

So if two of you go up there, you'll only have 27 inches of personal space each. That's one foot less than you would get with a twin. So if you've ever regretted that a twin was too small, you may want to reconsider sharing a double bed with a partner.

That said, double beds are ideal if you're flying solo. Because a double bed is 15 inches wider than a single bed, you will have ample room to snuggle up and make yourself comfortable.

The only downside? Since double beds are only 75 centimeters long, they can be too short for particularly tall people.

What is a queen bed?

A queen size bed is 80 inches long and 60 inches wide. This makes it 15 cm wider than a double bed and 21 cm wider than a single bed. Queen size beds are also 12 cm longer than double beds and single beds. So with a queen size bed, you don't just get width, you get length too.

Queen size beds may not appear much larger than double beds. But when it comes to sleeping, a little extra space can go a long way.

If you share a queen-size bed with a partner, each of you will have 30 inches of personal space. Now that's even less than what you'd get on a single bed alone.

But it is more than sharing a double bed. Plus, the extra 12 centimeters in length can make a difference, especially if one of you is tall.

And of course, the extra space a queen-size bed offers is truly luxurious if you're alone. The 60-inch width gives you plenty of room to move.

And if you're tall, the 80-inch length is the best there is. Of course, you could splurge on a California king-size bed, which is 21 inches long. But even if you get on a king size bed, it is only 80 centimeters long. (King beds are 16 inches wider than Queen beds, but not more.)

Double bed vs. Double bed

So far, we've been able to answer one of your questions: What's the difference between a double bed and a queen-size bed? And to sum it up, the answer is: queen beds are 6 inches wider and 6 inches longer than double beds.
