Easy Guide to Build an Amazing Backyard Koi Pond

A koi pond is a beautiful water feature that can liven up any drab space. Imagine relaxing by your beautiful koi pond after a long day... rushing water and swimming fish immediately ease your stress and anxiety.

Not to mention, your landscape will be on a whole new level of awesome. The focus of this garden is a 1400-gallon Japanese koi pond and waterfall surrounded by a walkway, pathways, rocks, statues, and lush plants. Follow these simple steps to create your own koi pond in your garden:

What do you need:

  • Sand
  • Polyvinyl Chloride Coating
  • Aquarium sealer
  • Spray foam insulation
  • Koi, snails, frogs, toads
  • Water Pump
  • Lagoon heater (depends on the weather)

Instructions:

1. Plan a surface area of 50 square feet or more (such as an 8-foot diameter circle or a 5 x 10-foot rectangle) and a depth of 1 1/2 to 2 feet.

2. Cover the sides and bottom of the pond hole with 2 inches of wet sand. Cover this with a polyvinyl chloride coating, spreading the edges above the ground. We use additional pond liner material, plus aquarium sealant and spray foam insulation, to ensure a waterproof base.

3. Build the tank in partial shade; the strong sun makes the water very hot and allows the algae to flourish.

Note: If you live in an area with severe weather, bring your fish indoors in winter. In milder climates, fish can live under a foot of ice with a vent hole created by a pond heater, which is often referred to as a "floating defroster."

4. Add snails, frogs, frogs, and turtles to help control insects and algae.

5. For a waterfall, install a pump that runs at half the tank capacity per hour.
