How to Create the Perfect Cozy Reading Nook

In our chaotic lives, an afternoon without responsibilities or even five minutes is a luxury. But if we dedicate spaces in our homes to peaceful activities - like reading a novel, reading a bunch of magazines, or even putting on a mud mask and meditating - they can serve as reminders to slow down and find time for self-care in between hectic hours.

A reading corner can accomplish this. While a soft chair, plush cushion, and ottoman are an invitation to open a favorite reading, a reading nook is a place where you can sit back and breathe.

It should be a corner or, if you prefer, an entire room in your house dedicated to your needs and unique personality.

What are the things that make you feel comfortable? Is this a warm hand-knit blanket that you bought from Etsy? A small table full of books, photos and flowers? Perhaps you are surrounded by a real indoor jungle of houseplants.

The trick is to think about the things that make you feel happy and relaxed and bring those items to your reading corner. Here are some inspiring spaces to start.

Create a reading corner for two

If you prefer to read in the company of an important person, friend or pet, bring a flirtation to your reading corner. Take a tip from The Merrythought and pack it with comfy pillows and include wall art, quotes, and photos to add a warm touch. Cat not included.

Knit in a splash of color

Color has the power to instantly inspire happiness. If your reading corner is meant to be a happy place, a colorful scene in full color might be just what you need.

In this charming reading nook, watercolor artist and surface pattern designer Tessie Fay showcased a vibrant green chair, charming polka dot pillow, and pink side table, producing a cheery palette.

Leave the chair

Sometimes a reading nook doesn't even need a chair, as demonstrated here in this tribal-themed nook made by Room for Sarah Gibson on Tuesday.

A small corner houses faux fur, a blanket, and hand-dyed shibori pillows (which you can make yourself). A camp chair doubles as a small table or stool, proving that even the smallest corners can double as reading nooks.

View a gallery wall

By putting the book down, you can allow your mind to wander, taking in the landscape around you. Create a beautiful backdrop to look through a gallery wall that includes some of your most beloved pieces, such as antique plaques, vintage photographs, and other treasures that make you smile.

This gallery wall curated by Sarah Melito at The Belmont Ranch is a great inspiration.
