How To Decorate An Apartment On A Low Budget

Decorating an apartment or house for rent can be challenging. Tenants often stick to existing walls, floors, cabinets, and other finishes, which in rental spaces can be generic and nondescript.

In some cases, many homeowners are happy to pay the bill for approved property improvements. The footprint? Usually you do the work yourself (for free) and you cannot take the upgrades with you when you move out. However, if you plan to stay for a while, it might be worth investing a little time in the property.

Some landlords may even be willing to negotiate a lower rent in exchange for some of the free share capital.

If making property improvements isn't an option, there are still plenty of affordable ways to decorate a rental space and take your rental home or apartment from drab to fabulous. Try these simple, low-budget decorating ideas to infuse your apartment or rental home with a unique style and personality.

Walls

Cheap (and free) wall art is extremely easy to make, even if you're not the artistic type. Smooth stretched canvases are affordable and just about anything can be uncoupled or painted on.

For an even simpler alternative, frame the color-coordinated colors of pretty fabric or scrapbook papers to match your dรฉcor.

Wall stickers are cheap and easy to come by, and many are made for easy removal. The decals can even be applied to furniture and tiles. Do you want to save even more? Do your thing. Take a roll of removable adhesive shelf liner. This can easily be cut into various shapes or designs, applied to the wall, and then removed before going out.

Curtains don't just need to cover windows. Hang cheap curtains or fabrics along a wall to create an interesting element and add color and texture to your space. You can even hang a curtain from the ceiling to divide a large area.

Mirrors are a cost effective way to enhance a space. Mirrors make small spaces appear larger and dark ones lighter. Cheap mirrors can be found at home decor stores or home sales to find cheap finds.

If you can paint, choose light neutral colors that are easier to repaint before moving in. Add color through other elements like art, furniture, and decor.

Floors

Carpets are a tenant's best friend. Not only do they protect the floor (and your warehouse), but they're also a great way to add warmth, color, and design to a tacky space. In a studio apartment or great room, rugs can also be used to define living areas.

Windows

Oftentimes, window treatments are already installed in a rental property, but if you need or want window treatments on a budget, consider making your own - no sewing skills required.

Fusible glue net (also known as dot witchcraft) is available at fabric and craft stores and can be used to create simple fabric panels with finished edges to hang over glass windows or doors.

Turning on

Exchanging existing fixtures in rented properties is generally not allowed, but if a particular fixture is unsightly or not working it may be worth mentioning to the landlord. A good landlord might surprise you and offer to replace or refund it.

Adding additional lighting to a room is an inexpensive way to brighten a drab space. When lighting a room, think about layers from top to bottom.

Suspended lighting is a given, and lamps can provide a soft glow or task lighting, but don't neglect floor or accent lighting to highlight art, cabinets, or bookshelves.

Furniture

If your rental space is small, consider double furniture. A sofa bed, a built-in bed or a loft bed can be very functional in a study. Ottomans that act as storage solutions or coffee tables that transform into dining tables are creative solutions for tight spaces.

With Craigslist and online exchanges, extensive flea markets, and garage sales, furnishing a rental home on a tight budget is easier than ever. Invest in a new mattress, but buy it used for everything else. It's amazing what an old dresser can look like when painted peacock blue.

Accessories

One of the best ways to add color and personality to a rental space is through accessories. The accessories are easily transportable. To add exclusivity to an otherwise bland apartment or rental home, look for handcrafted or antique items to decorate your space.

Add pops of color to pillows and small accessories like pottery, picture frames, or book covers. These items are inexpensive, they can be easily painted, covered, or gifted if they won't match or fit in your next home.

Indoor plants can add a much-needed touch of life to an otherwise bland space, and indoor plants are affordable. If you work long hours or are not interested in a lot of maintenance, try succulents or other easy-care species.
