So today, we decided to share a step-by-step guide to making your own lamp and a video tutorial below with a series of amazing ideas that we know you will love.
Find Perfect Pieces to Complete Your Interior Style!
You can use just about anything for the base: a pile of old books, old plates, a bottle, an old bobbin, even a pile of baseballs. The only criterion is that you should be able to poke a hole in it. Here's how to make it:
Materials and tools:
- Decorative object to be used as a base
- Drill with a 3/8-inch bit
- Woodblock (stained and finished in the desired color)
- Four wooden knob caps for a lamp base
- Wood glue
- Threaded lamp rod with nut and bolt
- Lamp kit including lamp cord, plug, and harp
- Mountain range
- Screwdriver
- knife or wire stripper
- Lampshade
Steps:
1. Drill a hole in the center of the item you use as a base. It may be necessary to mount the item to a block of wood to create a strong base; in that case, you will also need to drill a hole in the woodblock.
2. Stain or paint the tops of the wooden knobs to match their base. Glue the button caps to the bottom of the base. This will lift the base and allow the lamp cord to pass underneath.
3. Using a saw, cut the lamp stem to the desired length and file any sharp edges. Pass the lamp stick through the bottom of the decorative object and the wooden base. Use a washer and nut to secure the download to the bottom of the base.
4. To make the lamp cord easier to pass through the pole, tape the end of the cord around the lamp with masking tape. Next, thread the lamp wire through the lamp post at the bottom of the base until approximately 5 inches of wire protruding from the top of the post.
5. Thread the socket components onto the lamp wire in this order: the locknut, neck, harp holder, and socket cap. Make sure to screw the plug cap onto the rod securely; that's what keeps all the other parts in place.
6. Separate about 5 cm of the cord from the lamp cord. Use a pocket knife or wire stripper to strip ½ inch of insulation from each wire, being careful not to cut the wire.
7. To prevent wires from passing through the lamp stem, tie a lock knot by looping each end of the wire. Hold one end of one loop in front of the spliced wire and the other loop behind the spliced wire. Pass each end through the loop formed by the opposite thread and tighten the knot. To make sure the knot is secure, pull the plug end of the lamp cord.
8. Connect the cables to the socket. To ensure there are no frayed edges, turn the exposed cables clockwise. The neutral wire, usually ribbed, is connected to the silver terminal. The hot wire is connected to the brass terminal. Bend the wire around the screw in the same direction it will turn and tighten.
9. Route the cables and put the plug cover in place. When the plug cap clicks, you know the connection is secure.
10. Add the harp and a lamp.
