How to Fix Cracked Glass

Cracked glass is a common issue with items like trim, mirrors, cookware, or door glass when they come into contact with hard objects.

Small cracks can quickly grow into larger ones, potentially damaging the entire glass item.

However, you can repair the crack quickly and cost-effectively to prevent a complete replacement.

Understanding Glass Repair

Repairing cracked glass will not make the crack completely invisible from all angles.

Instead, it provides a cosmetic touch-up that reduces its visibility. From certain angles, the crack might disappear, but from others, it will still be visible.

The repair process uses two-part epoxy, which consists of a resin and a hardener. These components need to be mixed to work effectively.

For minor repairs, it’s best to use epoxy in a double-barrel syringe, which keeps the resin and hardener in the correct ratio. The excess epoxy can be trimmed off after it cures, ensuring a clean finish.

Types of Cracked Glass You Can Fix

You can repair photo glass, door glass, single-pane windows, mirrors, and glass tiles using the two-part epoxy method.

Non-heating cookware can also be repaired. While phone or tablet screens can be patched to some extent, the crack will still be visible, but the repair prevents the glass from falling apart and stops the crack from spreading.

However, avoid repairing microwave door glass, double-pane windows, shower or tub door glass, or car windows with this method.

Tools and Materials Needed

Tools:

  • Utility knife blade
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Wooden toothpick
  • Safety glasses

Materials:

  • Two-part epoxy
  • Glass cleaner
  • Painter’s tape

Step-by-Step Repair Instructions

  1. Prepare the Work AreaPlace a clean piece of cardboard on your work surface and make sure you are in a well-ventilated area. Since epoxy has a working time of only five minutes, have all tools and materials ready. Use disposable items like a mixing stick, gloves, and the work surface to prevent contamination.
  2. Clean and Dry the GlassEnsure the glass is clean and free of debris for proper adhesion. If possible, separate and clean the edges of broken glass; if not, leave the pieces intact. Allow the glass to dry completely before proceeding. Wear safety glasses when handling the glass.
  3. Prepare the EpoxyLoosen or cut the ends of both epoxy cylinders and ensure that both nozzles are open evenly. Dispense the epoxy onto a disposable surface, like a paper plate, and mix thoroughly using a wooden stick.
  4. Add Epoxy to the Crack
    • Separated Glass: If the glass pieces are separated, apply a small amount of epoxy along the broken edge and hold the pieces together. Use painter’s tape to secure the bond while the epoxy cures.
    • The glass that’s still intact: If the pieces are still joined, gently work the epoxy into the crack using a wooden stick, as if you were spreading butter on bread. Leave a small amount of excess epoxy, as this helps during the cutting process.
  5. Trim Excess EpoxyOnce the epoxy is fully cured, use a utility knife or razor blade to trim off the excess. Hold the blade at a low angle (about 15 degrees) and slide it along the glass surface. Keep the blade level to ensure a smooth, even finish.
  6. Clean the GlassUse paper towels and glass cleaner to remove fingerprints or any remaining residue, restoring a clean look to the glass.

Keeping Your Glass Items in Good Condition

Fixing cracked glass using two-part epoxy is a simple, cost-effective solution that extends the lifespan of your glass items.

While it doesn’t make the damage completely invisible, it stabilizes the crack and prevents further breakage.

For best results, always handle the repair process carefully and ensure the epoxy is fully cured before using the item again.

By taking these steps, you can enjoy longer-lasting glass items without the expense of complete replacements.
