How to Make a DIY Christmas Tree Collar

Decorating the Christmas tree is the definitive festive tradition of the season, and if you are looking for an alternative to this year's traditional skirt, we have two great DIY tree necklace ideas for you that will decorate your tree and make it the piece central of all the Christmas decorations.

Tree necklaces are usually made from wicker or metal and the store bought versions can be quite expensive, but our two homemade versions are inexpensive, simple to make, and guaranteed to add a sleek, polished look to your tree.

Nothing beats a wicker basket to evoke the charm and nostalgia of an old-fashioned Christmas, and nothing more traditional than a clean galvanized metal necklace with rustic simplicity that beautifully complements a lavishly decorated tree!

DIY Galvanized Tree Collar

Get the right bathtub
First, choose your galvanized round tub and make sure its diameter is large enough to accommodate the tree stand you will be using. After being used as a collar, the tub will be essentially upside down, so you want the diameter of the widest part of the tub to be at least an inch or two larger than the diameter of the tree stand.

Make a hole
Next, turn the tub upside down so that its base is on top. Wearing gloves and goggles, poke a hole in the metal (near the edge), which will give you a starting point for the reciprocating saw.

Cut the base
Using a reciprocating saw, cut the entire base of the galvanized tub. Be very careful as the cut edges can be sharp. If they are, take a sturdy sandpaper designed for metal and sand it down (even with gloves, of course!) Until they are no longer sharp to the touch.

Configure Tree
Now that the necklace is ready, it's time to start decorating! Place the tree stand inside the galvanized necklace and assemble your Christmas tree. If you're using a real tree, watering it will be a breeze - there's no need to mess with the tree skirt that needs to be groomed every time the tree is watered. (You can also skip cleaning the tree skirt from year to year.)

DIY wicker tree necklace

Choose a basket
First, measure the tree stand and choose a wicker basket that fits your size. You want a basket that is wide enough to fit the diameter of the stand, with an extra inch or more on each side to allow the stand to fit comfortably. While a round basket works well, you can certainly go for a square one if you want to add a slightly more modern touch to your tree.

cut the wicker
Then it is time to cut the basket. It may seem like a daunting task, but don't worry, it has the horizontal line of the wicker to guide you and help you make a level cut. Take your basket and flip it over so the base is on top. Decide the height of your neck and then, using a pair of scissors (or scissors, if it is easier for you to use), begin to cut gently, following the wicker line until all the "cap" is removed.

Protect and configure
This is an optional step, but if it looks like some of the wicker threads on top might fall apart, just attach them with some hot glue. Now that your wicker necklace is ready, it's time to put your Christmas tree stand inside, assemble the tree, and start decorating.
