How to Repair a Clogged Garbage Disposal

Garbage disposals, or shredders, can be subject to several common problems. They can get stuck when objects catch the impeller blades inside the instrument.

Drain connections can loosen and cause leaks under the sink. The drain that connects the disposer to the rest of the sink drain pan assembly can become clogged and cause water to flow back to the sink where the disposer is installed.

In a double sink, when only the disposer bowl backs up with water, the disposer drain fitting is likely clogged.

What are you going to need

Equipment tools

  • Bucket
  • Channel pliers
  • Scrubbing brush or wire
  • Drain the snake (if necessary)

Materials:

  • paper towels or rags

Instructions:

1.Remove P-Trap

Place a collection bucket under the debris drain trap. Use channel pliers to disconnect the sliding nut connections on the drain pan and remove the pan.

It is not uncommon for the water to leak out of the pipes when you disconnect them. The trap will be full of water and probably food waste.

Pour it carefully into the bucket. Keep paper towels or rags nearby to avoid accidental spills.

2.Clear the trap

Check the trap attachment for clogs or clogs. Most of the time, obstructions will occur in the sharp curve of the trap. A small scrub brush is the most effective way to remove any residue.

You can also use a taut hanger or other wire.

3.Check the trap arm

If the plug is not in the siphon, it may be in the siphon arm, the horizontal drain piece that connects the siphon to the branched drain tube that goes to the wall.

You can remove the arm from the trap by loosening the sliding nut where the arm meets the vertical branch drain and pulling on the arm.

Clean the inside of the trap arm with a brush or wire.

4.Snake draining the branch (if necessary)

If the P-trap and trap arm were relatively clean when you removed them, the clog is likely in the drain that leads to the main drain in the house.

The best way to clear this line is to wind it with a snake or drain auger. A simple 25-foot drum auger (sold, home centers, and hardware stores) usually solves the problem.

Run the auger cable down the drain under the sink, rotating the drum as it passes the cable through the bends of the tube and breaks the clog.

Extend the cable and lower it back down the drain several times to make sure the clog has been removed.

5.Reassemble the drain

Reinstall the trap arm and the P-trap, tightening the slide nuts firmly. Check the position of the parts and make sure the trap arm is tilted slightly towards the branch drain.

When everything is in order, tighten the nuts completely by hand.

If necessary, tighten a bit more with needle-nose pliers, but be careful not to overtighten as this can damage the nuts or threads.

6.Empty the drain

Run water through the waste for several minutes to flush any loose debris through the drain system.

Once you are sure the drain is working properly, you can do a larger rinse by placing a plug over the disposal opening, filling the sink with hot water, and quickly pulling the plug out.

This helps clear the tubes and dislodge any remaining material from the clog.
