How to Select the Right Size Area Rug
Hello, how are you today? Welcome to our blog about Home. We hope you are very well and looking forward to a new post, project, or tutorial for your home.
Today we want to share with you something special:
Choose the Right Size Rug
The size of a rug can greatly affect the overall effect of the room. A rug that is too small for your space can make the environment unattractive.
A rug that is too big for the environment can, paradoxically, make the environment appear smaller. The right-sized rug will add warmth and balance to the environment, creating the perfect finishing touch.
When shopping for a pre-made patterned rug, such as an Oriental or Persian rug, start by considering the standard sizes available. Rugs are typically available in the following "standard" sizes.
(Note that they may vary inches plus or minus):
- 3 feet by 5 feet
- 4 feet by 6 feet
- 5 feet by 8 feet (Note: This has replaced the 6 feet by 9 feet size that was formerly standard.)
- 8 feet by 10 feet
- 9 feet by 12 feet
Typically, the manufacturer offers the mat in three or four of the standard sizes. Be sure to check the available sizes when shopping around for rugs, to make sure the rug you like is available in the size you want.
Of course, if you have your own custom rug, you have the luxury of having it in the exact size you want.
It is a huge advantage to have your rug made from loose-weave fabric, especially if your space would fit better in a non-standard size.
How to Determine the Size You Need
The most common mistake people make when purchasing an area rug is choosing a size that is too small for your space.
Oftentimes, they spend a lot of money on a new hard-surfaced floor, such as wood or laminate, and can't bear the thought of covering it too much. This is an understandable concern.
But instead of hiding the floor underneath, the carpet in the right area will make it stand out, enhancing its beauty.
It is often recommended that you decide on the appropriate size of the rug based on the configuration of the furniture and not the specific size of the room.
Some designs look better, allowing a certain amount of dirt to be visible around the edge of the room. Therefore, the main guideline in determining the best carpet size is to always consider the arrangement of the furniture in relation to the size of the room.
This "rule" is especially true for placing a rug in the living room, dining room, or bedroom.
Hallway and Foyer Area Rugs
For areas of the home that are unfurnished, such as hallways and hallways, the size of the rug is determined based on the amount of space that will be left exposed at the edges of the room.
For larger areas, a little more floor can be seen; usually between 12 and 24 inches. For smaller areas, decrease this value; six or eight inches should be enough.
Use the Tape Trick to 'See' the Area Rug
If you are having trouble visualizing the size of a rug in a specific room, here is a tip to help you. Before purchasing rugs, measure an area of the size you plan to require, based on the standard sizes listed above.
Then, using removable tape or something similar that will not damage the floor, remove the area you just measured.
You will be able to see the outline of the edge of the rug, which will help you see how a rug of this size would fit into your space. When you are satisfied with the size of the stored area, you are ready to shop for rugs!
One Last Point
Finally, there is one final rule of thumb for determining the size of a rug: rulers are made to be broken. These are just guidelines and only you can determine what is best for your home because you need to live in it.
The important thing is to make the decision with peace of mind and make purchases because investing in a quality carpet is a significant expense. Your home should reflect your tastes, so if you want to break any of the rules, go for it.
