How to Build a Headboard

Today we are making a DIY queen-size headboard.

This is a great beginner project because it doesn't require a lot of complicated cutting or measurements.

Step 1: Make the Structure

The frame is a simple 2x4 frame for the 1x4 and 1x6 liner plates to sit.

These are the dimensions I used ... double-check and make sure they are suitable for your project and materials.

Step 2: Place your Legs

The legs are made of two 1x4s on each leg. A 2x4 strap is placed inside the leg for additional structural support.

Step 3: Add Slats

I cut each 1x6 slat to fit as I went to ensure a perfect fit.

Some of my 1x6 boards had a bit of a cup and needed to be fixed so they were level with the studs.

Step 4: Place an Upper Part

I ripped a 1x6 for the top 5 "widths and cut it to the correct length so there was a 3/4" overhang on all three sides. The back is level with the nails.

Step 5: Sand and Stain

I sanded everything down to a 220 grit and smeared it with a dark walnut stain.
