Yoga apps have really come a long way. Just a few years ago, most of them were basically electronic flashcards, perhaps with narration and sequencing on the wacky end of the spectrum. Video is now standard, as well as many other options for customizing the user experience.
The yoga posture sequences flow together almost seamlessly in a way that makes the best of these applications a true boon to the practitioner at home.
Many of them are free (with in-app purchases available), and most rely on offering a variety of video "lessons" and a library of poses where you can get more detailed instructions.
We've run a test run with the most popular yoga apps so you have a better idea of what you'll get when you click download. Not surprisingly, our favorites come from people with strong yoga experiences rather than app developers trying to capitalize on the popularity of yoga.
Gaiam's Yoga Studio
Yoga Studio offers users many ways to organize yoga sessions at home. You can use their collections, which last between 10 and 60 minutes. This includes sequences for beginning, intermediate, and advanced students with topics such as balance, flexibility, and strength. There are also sun salutations, poses for back pain, and yoga for runners.
The download costs around $ 4.99, which is pretty standard for this type of app. Yoga Studio offers the best value for your five dollars.
Down Dog is co-created and features yoga teacher Adrienne Kimberly. It has some unique features that set it apart from the competition.
The pose library is impressive in that it features detailed video instructions for each pose, with plenty of alignment information and modifications for beginners.
The videos are actually on YouTube with in-app links, which means you will need an internet connection to access them. This format also means that you can view them without the application.
FitStar Yoga with instructions from Tara Stiles innovates with personalized and responsive yoga sequences. The app relies on your feedback to personalize your sessions while providing some defined yoga exercises.
Download the free version for a trial, but you will quickly see that you are losing full access unless you subscribe to a monthly subscription.
With its illustrated images, Pocket Yoga looks very different from other yoga apps. Your approach is also a little different. It is based at Gaia Flow Yoga, a studio in the Dallas, Texas area, with its own method and terminology.
Daily Yoga takes a very different approach than most yoga apps. It is organized around a series of multi-week programs with themes such as "5-Day Detox," "Improve Your Flexibility," and "Let It Melt."
Each of these programs includes 20 to 30 minutes of yoga a day and lasts for 1 to 5 weeks.
