Embracing CAL: A Solution to Unfinished Crochet Projects

It's not uncommon for crocheters to start projects with enthusiasm and then abandon them halfway through. This can be due to various reasons such as the pattern being too complicated, a shortage of the right yarn, or unexpected life events getting in the way.

If you're one of those crocheters with a bottom drawer full of unfinished projects, there's no need to despair. One solution to this problem is to join a Crochet-Along (CAL) project.

A CAL is a group of people who sign up to work on the same crochet project, usually consisting of squares, and complete one element every week or month until the project is finished.

CAL projects have become increasingly popular in recent years, and for a good reason. Peer pressure and friendly competition can be excellent motivators to keep going and help you finish the project you started. Being part of a CAL group can also be an opportunity to connect with other crocheters, share tips, and learn new techniques.

CAL projects come in various shapes and sizes. Some focus on creating blankets or afghans, while others may involve making accessories such as scarves or hats. There are also CAL projects designed for different skill levels, from beginner-friendly to advanced.

Participating in a CAL project is easy. Many crochet designers and bloggers offer CALs on their websites or social media platforms.

You can also find CALs through online crochet groups or forums. Once you've found a project that interests you, simply sign up and follow the instructions provided. You can work at your own pace, and there's usually no deadline to finish the project.

If you're a crocheter with a drawer full of unfinished projects, consider joining a CAL project. The camaraderie and support of a group can be an excellent motivator to help you complete the project you started.

CAL projects are an opportunity to connect with other crocheters, learn new skills, and create beautiful items that you'll be proud to show off.

If you're interested in CAL projects, have a look online for the major manufacturers of yarn like Rowan (as above), Stylecraft, Red Heart and so on, who all offer supported crochet along projects, with tutorials, how-tos and more - and of course have lots of yarn for you to choose from.

If you prefer to be involved with a more independent CAL and you're not crazy about flowery themes, you could try Two Hearts Crochet, which has some amazing patterns celebrating Doctor Who, Harry Potter and Star Wars, among others.

One of the joys of the CAL projects is that no one expects you to finish everything all in one go. A CAL is a labor of love, spread over as many weeks (or months) as you need to take, with no rushing.

The fact that your fellow crocheters will share their pictures of the finished result on social media does help, though, to add just enough sense of gentle competition to keep you working away to the end.

A favorite CAL of mine is the Hexagon crochet along organized by a group of bloggers. There are eight motifs to choose from, all reasonably simple, which you can make into a beautiful blanket - or a purse, a belt, a pillow, coasters or anything else you like.

The flexibility of the outcome reflects the different ideas of all the eight crocheters involved, and there are plenty of pictures to show you what to do, how to do it and what to use it for when you've done it.

If you've never tried a CAL, why not give one a go - you could be saying goodbye forever to that pile of abandoned projects.
