Federal Income Tax Deadlines in 2021

April 15 should be the official federal income tax deadline for filing your income tax return each year, but that date is not set in stone. The deadline sometimes changes to the next business day when April 15 falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) typically begins processing tax returns in late January, but due to pandemic issues, for those filing 2020 taxes, the first day of filing has been postponed until February 12, 2021.

The deadline for filing a personal income tax return has been extended to May 17, 2021. This also extends the deadline for any money owed without incurring a late payment penalty or interest.

It does not affect estimated quarterly tax payments still due as of April 15, 2021 for business owners and those applying as self-employed because they have no employer tax withholding.

Deadlines in the calendar year 2021 for 2020 returns

The deadlines for annual returns are almost invariably in the spring, with extensions available through the fall:

Personal Income Tax Returns: April 15 falls on a business day in 2021, and this year is not a holiday, but due to the extension, the deadline to file your personal income tax return for 2020 is now on May 17, 2021.

Estimated Tax Payments for Tax Year 2020 (IRS Form 1040) - For 2020, due July 15 and September 15. Normally, there would have been two additional payments for the first and second quarters on April 15 and June 15, but the IRS disabled them due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The fourth and final estimated payment for fiscal year 2020 is due on January 15, 2021.

Company Returns (IRS Form 1065) - Typically due March 15. The extended deadline is September 15, 2021.

Company C Income Tax Returns (IRS Form 1120) - Due April 15, 2021 for C companies operating in a calendar year.

The extended deadline is October 15, 2021. The deadline for C corp returns is the 15th of the fourth month after the end of the company's fiscal year, if the company operates in a fiscal year instead of a calendar year. The deadline is the 15th of the third month after the end of the fiscal year for companies with a fiscal year ending in June.

Corporation Returns (IRS Form 1120-S) - These returns are due March 15, 2021 for companies operating in a calendar year. The extended deadline is September 15, 2021.

The deadline for company and S company returns is the 15th day of the third month after the end of the tax year, if they are in a tax year instead of a calendar year .

Returns from foreign companies expire on the same date as returns from other companies: March 15, 2021.

Trust, property and gift tax returns are due April 15, 2021.

Returns of non-resident foreigners expire on April 15, 2021.

Declarations for exempt organizations expire May 17, 2021 for organizations with a fiscal year ending December 31.
