How Long Can You Stay on Your Parent’s Health Insurance?

Current federal law allows you to stay on your parents' policy until age 26, and some state laws allow you to keep coverage longer.

When it comes time to get your own coverage, it's important to know how to get a policy and understand the type of plan that best suits your needs. Some plans offer more affordable premiums, while others pay more for health care costs.

But the most important thing is that you continue your health insurance coverage, even if you are young and healthy.

When will you lose health insurance through your parents?

Currently, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) requires that children be covered by their parents 'health plan until they turn 26, if the parents' health plan provides coverage for dependents. The rule applies to married and unmarried children and to all types of health plans, including employer-sponsored coverage, according to the Ministry of Labor.

The law also allows you to continue with the parenting plan if:

go to college or drop out of school
adopt or have a child
leave the parents' house
It is not claimed that they depend on their parents' tax returns.
Decline an offer of employer-sponsored health insurance

If your parents are covered by the health insurance market, you can stay on the policy until December 31 of the year you turn 26, or the oldest age allowed by your state's insurance code.

Some states extend the age limit.

Some states follow the ACA's 26-year rule, but others have laws that allow you to stay longer on your parents' health insurance policy, but only under certain conditions. Although the following states provide exceptions, health laws are subject to repeal or revision.
