IRS Launches Online Authorization for Tax Pros
The IRS took a step to modernize its procedures this week, a welcome step after the problems it encountered during the pandemic.
The new digital feature makes it easier for taxpayers and tax professionals to move invoices online and avoid paper forms, the IRS said Monday.
The Tax Pro Account feature allows individuals to provide a Power of Attorney (POA) to an inspector and professional to view taxpayer accounts with a Tax Information Authorization (TIA).
The tax professional must use the Tax Pro account, available on IRS.gov, to request a POA or TIA, which will appear in the taxpayer's online account.
The taxpayer reviews the application and approves or rejects it. If approved, access to taxpayer information will generally be available to the POA within 48 hours.
Digitizing the tax system has been a goal of the IRS for a few years, but efforts accelerated after the COVID-19 pandemic closed most offices and kept millions of people at home, severely hampering the ability of the agency to serve taxpayers and professionals in the tax area.
Full Digital Ahead
The IRS said the launch of Tax Pro on Monday is an important step because it eliminates the need to print, fill out and submit forms that must be manually processed by the IRS, which can take weeks. The IRS hopes to increase the options for electronic interactions in the future.
"The ability for taxpayers to connect online with their tax professionals is an innovative step for the IRS," IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig said in a statement. "This is the basic first step toward a more integrated digital tax system that will benefit taxpayers, tax professionals and the IRS."
The new feature is only available to individual taxpayers with a US address, not corporations or other entities. Tax professionals must be current with the IRS and authorized to access the IRS database.
