What Is Year to Date?

Year to date is the amount of time that has elapsed from the beginning of the year to the current day. The year to date is often used to describe performance, totals, or trends in financial information since the beginning of a fiscal or calendar year. Examples include annual performance to date on your investments, contributions made to retirement accounts, or income generated by a business.
Definition and examples from one year to date
A year-to-date quantity is a total running quantity since the beginning of an annual period. YTD can be measured based on a calendar year or a fiscal year. If based on a calendar year, the year-to-date amount is the cumulative total since January 1 of that year.
For example, a stock's cumulative annual return can be measured as the total return it has earned since January 1. Suppose a hypothetical stock is priced at $ 18.50 on November 12. Also assume that you opened the year at $ 15 per share on January 1, and for the sake of simplicity, let's assume that you have not paid a dividend.
That's a $ 3.50 increase over the $ 15 price from the first measurement day. The annual yield to date of these shares as of November 12 is 23%.
Yield to date will change based on the share value on the day you measure it to the stock to date value on the first day of the year, $ 15. If the share is worth $ 20 on December 15, the profitability to date of the year is 33%.
If the stock paid dividends, include them in the return. If the hypothetical stock in this example paid a dividend of $ 1 in the period, then the cumulative return on November 12 is 30%.
Alternative name: YTD

How is the YTD used?
YTD values ββare used to track performance or information over time, rather than waiting to measure year-end totals.
People can keep track of how much they are saving in their 401 (k), what they earned at work, and how much they paid in taxes during the year to date.
Business managers often look at year-to-date to track business expenses periodically throughout the year. Year-to-date sales are also evaluated throughout the year as a way to monitor performance.
