Everything You Need To Know To Start Yoga

When you're new to yoga, you probably have a lot of questions about what you're getting into, including what to wear, what to wear for class, and how to prepare. Knowing what to expect and what works beforehand will help you feel more comfortable during the first class. Here's what you need to know before your first broadcast.

What to wear

While it may seem like you need to dress up in designer yoga clothes before heading to class, this couldn't be further from the truth. For the first few lessons, use the items you already have one hand and keep things as simple as possible. Here are some tips:

Shoes - Yoga is most often practiced barefoot. Occasionally, you will see people wearing some type of sock or shoe, but this is usually due to an injury or medical condition. If you feel very uncomfortable taking off your shoes in front of strangers, do so with the use of yoga socks. These specialty socks have non-slip grips on the bottom that "grip" the mat and prevent your feet from slipping.

Pants: There are many different styles of yoga pants, but you don't need to rush to buy a special pair before your first class. Any comfortable pants or shorts will do, but be sure to avoid pants that don't stretch, like jeans.

After a few lessons, you may decide that you need pants that are shorter, longer, looser, higher at the waist, or that don't sag every time you stretch. It is a good time to buy. You can go to big box stores like Target or Walmart, which have sportswear lines, or you can look for specialty retailers that specifically target the yoga market.

Tops: A slightly fitted shirt works best for yoga. Big baggy shirts, or even baggy training tops, aren't great as they slip every time you lean over ... and you'll lean a lot. Sleeveless tops are popular because they allow freedom of movement in the arms and shoulders. Wear the type of bra you prefer to exercise.

Hot Yoga: If you are going to practice hot yoga or Bikram, there are some special considerations. Because classes are held in a hot room, cotton clothing and long blouses or pants are not ideal as they trap sweat and keep heat close to the body. It's a good idea to wear shorts and moisture-wicking clothing to make practice easier.

What a brig

Generally speaking, the only thing you need to bring to the first class is a positive attitude and an open mind. Sure, there are plenty of fun accessories that you can add to your yoga arsenal from time to time, but start small and keep things simple.

Carpet: If you're going to your first class, don't bother bringing a carpet if you don't have one. Most yoga places rent mats for a dollar or two. When you go to class, or if you practice at home, you will want to invest in your own mat. While you may be tempted to purchase an inexpensive mat from your local retailer, if you are truly committed to your yoga practice, a high-quality mat is worth investing in.

A well-made support mat that offers good traction and long-term durability makes all the difference. While there are many options on the market, retailers like Manduka, Liforme, and Yellow Willow are well-known brands with a good track record for quality and service. For a quality rug, expect to pay between $ 60 and $ 120.

Water bottle: If you are going to practice hot yoga, be sure to bring water with you. For other types of yoga, you can wait until after class for a drink.

Towel: If you tend to sweat a lot or do hot yoga, bring a hand towel to class.

Accessories: Unless you practice exclusively at home, it is not necessary to have your own accessories. Studios offer blocks, blankets and handles. Your teacher will tell you what accessories are needed for each class, but if she doesn't, she'll grab a notebook and leash anyway in case you need help posing.
