4 Tips To Save Money on Your Kitchen Renovation

Kitchens are one of the most expensive areas in the home to remodel due to material and labor costs. But the good news is that an inexpensive kitchen remodel is possible. As a homeowner, it's ultimately up to you to keep your kitchen renovation project costs low.
All the secondary parties involved, including contractors, subcontractors, architects, designers, and suppliers, are trying to maximize your profits while you try to maximize your savings.
While it is not common to work with a person who is intentionally trying to put holes in your budget by racking up additional costs, you will probably have to remember the minor parts of staying on budget throughout the project. What's easier to control are the remodeling choices you make to keep costs manageable.
Here are four tips for cutting your kitchen remodel budget.

1. Upgrade rather than replace cabinets
In general, all extraction and replacement projects are more expensive than projects that contain the most materials. Kitchen cabinets are an excellent example of this. New kitchen cabinets can be very expensive, especially if you need custom-made pieces to fit your space.
Fortunately, there are ways to upgrade your existing cabinets that are both environmentally friendly (because old cabinets won't go to waste) and cost-effective. Some of them include:
- Painting
- Coating
- Hardware
- Shelving
2. Refurbish the devices
In the past, many appliances were sent to the landfill during kitchen renovations. Fortunately, this outdated thinking is fading as municipalities have enacted restrictions against sending home appliances directly to landfills.
Now, information is available on how to repair appliances. And there is a thriving aftermarket online. This makes it possible for many homeowners to upgrade their own appliances rather than paying for a professional or spending money on something new.
Some appliances that you can repair yourself include:
- Dishwasher
- Fridge
- Microwave
- Water heater
- Water softener
- Garbage disposal
3. Maintain the same kitchen layout
Drastically changing the design of your kitchen is a sure way to increase your renovation budget. For example, moving the plumbing out of the sink, dishwasher, or refrigerator involves hiring plumbers. They will have to drill holes in your walls to make new pipes, which means additional cost for materials in addition to labor.
On the other hand, keeping your kitchen design essentially the same while updating the elements within that structure is incredibly cost-effective. In general, you will not need to add new plumbing or electricity.
You can also keep the existing soil if you want. (The floor is not usually under the cabinets, so if you change the layout, you will have to deal with the gaps in the floor.) And you can still achieve a whole new look in the space.
Also, galley or hallway style kitchens often have such limited space that changes to floor space are not possible unless you want to spend a lot of money on major changes to the structure of the house.
One-wall kitchen designs allow a bit more flexibility because they have an open side. In that case, adding a kitchen island is a great way to gain more prep and storage space without costly design changes.
4. Do some work yourself
DIY remodeling projects allow you to pay for materials and reduce labor costs to zero. Some remodeling projects that require beginner to intermediate DIY skills include:
- Interior painting
- Tiling
- Floor installation
- Changing plugs and lights
- Hanging dry-wall
- Installation of skirting boards and other finishes
Local hardware stores and community colleges often offer hands-on classes and demonstrations for common household projects. Additionally, hardware store employees are often available to offer product and design advice. Better yet, these educational resources are usually free.
However, in addition to cost, an important factor to consider when deciding between doing it yourself or hiring a professional is time. While a tight schedule generally means hiring a team of professionals, if you have the luxury of time to complete your kitchen renovation, you can do most of the work yourself.
