Discover How to Fix a Stinky Garbage Disposal Once for All

There is no denying how useful garbage disposal is. However, if not properly cared for, these machines that are designed for the sole purpose of making our lives easier can become a huge hassle.

It is vital not only to keep your kitchen smelling fresh but also for general cleaning that you take care of them frequently.

More than that, it is advisable to be proactive to avoid a stinky removal before it becomes a problem. Keep your sink odor and bacteria-free with these seven ways to clean your trash.

1. Thoroughly clean the exterior of the disposal

While it may seem a bit obvious, the first thing you need to do to resolve your smelly waste disposal situation is to clean all visible parts.

Take a sponge or cleaning stick with a decent amount of detergent and scrub thoroughly. Pay particular attention to the edge where food particles can lodge in the grooves.

Do not clean the inside of the unit! You must unplug it and remove it from the sink if you want to clean it manually.

Tip: Try using a toothpick to scrape off the nasty dirt that collects in the groove.

2. Clean the system

As we know, watering your waste while it's on won't fill the entire system. To completely clean the garbage disposal, you need to fill the sink halfway with water.

Add some vinegar (a cleaning superstar!) And unplug the plug while running the garbage disposal. This will push the vinegar and water mixture through all the small areas of the unit that would be extremely difficult to reach without taking everything apart.

3. Use ice and salt

Pour two cups of ice cubes in the trash and then a cup of rock salt. (We prefer rock salt for its coarse texture, but kosher or table salt works well as an alternative.)

Run cold water in the garbage disposal for 5-10 seconds while crushing the ice. When crushed, the ice cleans the blades of any sticky residue that has stuck to the blades, while the salt helps deodorize them.

4. Use citrus fruits as a natural deodorant

Grab some lemons (leftover from this delicious lemon bar recipe), or whatever citrus fruit you have on hand, chop them up, and throw them away for 5-10 seconds while running cold water. Citric acid will help break down the goo and naturally deodorize your entire kitchen.

5. Combine methods

If you really want to get serious about this, freeze the citrus chunk vinegar in an ice cube tray. Make sure to run cold water along with the shredder so that no pieces of fruit get stuck on the blades.

6. Try a baking soda solution

We couldn't talk cleaning and put down our tried and true baking soda cleaner. Just pour two cups of baking soda into the trash, followed by half a cup of vinegar.

This will cause an effervescent reaction that will somehow satisfy our desire to disinfect completely. Let the solution sit for an hour. When the hour is up, turn on the garbage disposal and cold water and let it sit for at least a minute.

7. Don't forget about preventive care

The best thing you can do for your waste disposal is to prevent it from getting dirty and smelly in the first place.

To do this, avoid flushing fibrous vegetables down the drain, such as celery, coffee grounds, egg whites and shells, pasta, fruit grains, potato skins, and of course, vegetable shortening.

You should also run cold water with the garbage disposal each time you use it to help remove any leftover debris. As an added precaution, it is advisable to run cold water and discard it for 5-10 seconds longer than you think is necessary.
