Today we want to share with you something special:

What You Need to Know to Wash Your Bean Bag

Poufs have been around since 1969 when the Italian company Zanotta produced the first line of chairs designed by Piero Gatti, Cesare Paolini, and Franco Teodoro. Since the earliest pear-shaped leather bags, ottomans have occupied bedrooms, recreation rooms, and elegant spaces.

Today, you can find beanbags upholstered in suede, faux leather, vinyl, leather, cotton, or microfiber in sizes ranging from those designed for newborns to giant bags that can accommodate more adults.

The padding is generally made of expanded polystyrene (EPS), a rigid cell plastic similar to polystyrene. Since the padding is waterproof, there are bag bags that are sold for outdoor use.

As ottomans are often used as stools, for children, and in living rooms, they can get very stained. Cleaning methods depend on the exterior coating, but most can be cleaned with supplies you probably have on hand.

How Often to Clean a Bean Bag Chair

In the same way that textured upholstered furniture needs to be cleaned regularly, so do bean bags. The frequency of cleaning depends on the amount of use, the presence of pets, and the type of fabric. However, some general rules apply.

  • Food or mud stains and splashes should be removed immediately for best results.
  • All types of chair covers should be dusted weekly with a microfiber cloth or a furniture vacuum brush.

How to clean ottomans with removable and washable covers

Read the Care Tags

Every ottoman sold in the United States must have a care tag. Read carefully to determine the best way to wash the removable cover. Follow these instructions for the water temperature and drying instructions.

Be Prepared

Before removing a washable liner, have a garbage bag handy in case the granule-filled inner bag rips or breaks. If the "holes" are leaking, place the inner bag in the trash bag until the tear is repaired or the chair is thrown away. It is not easy to capture millions of marbles.

Pretreat Stains and Wash

Before putting the cover in the washing machine, treat visible stains with an enzyme-based stain remover or a little strong detergent. Use your fingers or a soft bristle brush to apply the cleaner to the fabric. Set the cover aside and let the cleaner work for at least 15 minutes, then wash as directed.

Dry and Reassemble

Follow the drying instructions. When in doubt, air dry on a clothesline to prevent shrinkage from overheating the dryer. Reassemble the ottoman.

How to Clean Leather Bean Bag Chairs

Whether or not the outer cover is removable, the leather should not be thrown into the washing machine. If you have a vinyl or synthetic leather ottoman, you can clean it with a damp cloth and a little washing-up liquid.

Mix a Cleaning Solution

In a small bowl, mix a solution of warm water and chair or castile soap.

Wipe Down the Leather

Dip a microfiber cloth in the soapy solution and wring it out until it is damp. Start at the top and clean the leather upholstery. Rinse the cloth frequently to remove accumulated dirt.

Dry and Condition

Allow skin to air dry and, following product directions, apply skin conditioner to keep skin soft and supple.

How to Clean a Faux Fur Bean Bag Chair

Most synthetic leather covers are removable and washable. Always read and follow the directions on the caution label.

Use the Gentle Cycle

Put the washing machine on the gentle cycle and the lowest spin. This will help avoid excessive tangling due to excessive agitation.

Air-Dry and Fluff

Never put faux fur in a hot dryer. It can melt! Let the cover air dry. If it's tangled, use a wide-tooth comb to loosen unruly hair.

Smooth the fibers by mixing one teaspoon of hair conditioner with two cups of warm water in a spray bottle. Spray a small area of hair and use the comb to gently detangle the hair.

Work in a small area and paint slowly. If the fibers come off, you are painting too hard. When the synthetic leather is smooth, wipe the liner with a clean, damp white cloth and allow it to air dry.

How to Clean a Suede Bean Bag Chair

Microfiber, velvet, or velvet mimics the smooth, luxurious finish of genuine suede, but is easier to clean. Most microfiber covers are machine washable. Again, read the caution label. Natural suede needs very different care.

Vacuum or Brush

Genuine suede is not resistant to wet cleaning. Start by vacuuming the suede upholstery with an upholstery tool or brushing it thoroughly with a soft bristle brush.

Treat Stains

For grease stains, sprinkle the area with cornstarch or talcum powder. Let it sit for at least four hours to help extract the suede oil. Brush or vacuum the powder and repeat until the stain is gone.

For moisture stains, blot the chamois with a clean white cloth and allow the area to dry. Use a brush to lift the old batteries.

For mud stains, allow the mud to dry for easy removal. Brush and vacuum well.

TIP

Use stain repellent and water repellent to treat suede beanbags when new for easy cleaning.
