How to Clean a Coffee Maker in 3 Simple Steps

Your coffee maker may not be as clean as you think. Some of the warning signs of a dirty coffeemaker are clear: oily sludge and mineral build-up eventually form in the coffeemaker and coffeemaker, creating stains, obstructing the brewing process, and producing a bitter coffee. But germs and bacteria that you can't see can pose an even bigger problem.

A study by NSF International, an independent public health organization, cites coffee makers as the fifth most germinated place in your home, with half of the containers tested containing yeast and mold. These organisms can cause allergic reactions or even infections, so without proper cleaning, your coffee maker can cause nausea.

The good news is that you can learn how to clean a coffee maker to make it look shiny and (almost) new in just a few easy steps. We will show you how to clean a classic coffee maker with vinegar and water. Plus, we'll show you how to descale a Keurig coffee maker - it uses the same materials, just a slightly different process.

Regardless of what type of coffee maker you have, you will need to set aside a little time for the vinegar to work, so don't try this until you need to make a new coffee maker.

How to clean a coffee maker

If you use your coffee maker every day, plan to clean it about once a month. Occasional coffee drinkers only need to do this every three to six months. But if you notice visible build-up around the pot or basket, or if your coffee tastes bad, it's time to clean the coffeemaker.

What do you need

  • Coffee machine
  • Distilled white vinegar
  • Water
  • Coffee filters
  • Cleaning Cloth

Step 1: Fill the coffee pot with vinegar and water

To clean your coffee maker, start by filling the reservoir with a 50-50 mixture of distilled white vinegar and water. You can increase the vinegar to water ratio if your coffee maker has a particularly nasty build-up.

Vinegar not only disinfects the coffee pot and bottle but also dissolves built-up mineral deposits.

Step 2: Prepare and soak

Place a filter in the basket and turn on the coffee maker. Halfway through, turn off the coffee maker and let the rest of the vinegar solution soak into the pitcher and reservoir for about 30 to 60 minutes, depending on how much build-up you need to remove.

Step 3: Finish the cycle and rinse with water

Turn the coffeemaker back on and allow it to complete the brew cycle. Throw in the filter paper, if any, and pour in the vinegar solution.

Now you can release the aroma and flavor of the vinegar from the coffee pot. Fill the reservoir with fresh water, place a filter in the basket, turn on the coffeemaker, and let it complete the brew cycle.

Remove the filter, pour in the water, and repeat with clean water for a second cycle. Clean the coffee maker and coffee maker with a clean cloth.
