How to Get the Pee Smell Out of a Mattress

Dealing with a pee stain on your mattress is never fun, but it's a common problem that can be easily solved.

Whether it's from a toddler's accident, a pet mishap, or even an adult, getting rid of the smell of urine from a mattress is possible with a few simple household ingredients. Follow these steps to restore your mattress to its fresh and clean state.

What You'll Need

  • Rubber gloves

  • Microfiber towels or absorbent paper towels

  • Upholstery attachment for vacuum cleaner

  • Spray bottle

  • Soft-bristled brush

Household Ingredients:

  • Baking soda

  • White vinegar

  • 3% Hydrogen peroxide

  • Dish detergent (or enzymatic cleaner)

  • Borax (optional but effective)

Step 1: Deal with Fresh Stains

Remove the Bedding

Start by removing all sheets, pillowcases, and blankets. Wash them immediately to prevent the stain from setting in.

Blot the Area

Wear rubber gloves, and use microfiber towels or absorbent paper towels to gently blot the area. Avoid rubbing, as this can spread the stain further into the mattress.

Apply a Cleaning Solution

In a spray bottle, mix the following:

  • 1 cup white vinegar

  • 1 cup water

  • 1-2 tablespoons dish detergent

Spray generously onto the stained area and let it sit for 10-15 minutes. After that, blot the area with a clean towel.

Neutralize Odors with Baking Soda

While the area is still slightly damp, sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda over the stain. Let it sit for at least 8 hours or overnight to absorb moisture and odors.

Vacuum the Baking Soda

Once the baking soda has dried, use your vacuum’s upholstery attachment to remove it. If the smell persists, repeat the process until it’s gone.

Step 2: Tackle Old or Stubborn Stains

If the stain is old or the smell doesn’t go away, try these additional methods:

1. Baking Soda Paste

  • Mix 1 cup of baking soda with 1 tablespoon of water to form a paste.

  • Apply the paste to the stain and gently scrub with a soft brush.

  • Let it dry for 4-6 hours and then vacuum the area.

2. White Vinegar Treatment

  • Spray white vinegar directly onto the stained area.

  • Let it sit for 10-15 minutes, then blot it with a clean towel. The vinegar smell will dissipate as it dries.

3. Hydrogen Peroxide Solution

  • In a spray bottle, mix:

    • 1 cup of 3% hydrogen peroxide

    • 3 tablespoons of baking soda

    • 2-3 drops of dish detergent

  • Spray the solution onto the stain and let it sit until it dries. After it dries, vacuum the area.

Note: Hydrogen peroxide can bleach fabrics, so be sure to test it on a small, hidden area first before applying it to the entire stain.

4. Borax (Optional)

  • Mix 1 cup of Borax with 1/2 cup of warm water to form a paste.

  • Apply it to the stain and let it sit for 4-6 hours. Then, vacuum the paste off.

Additional Tips for Mattress Care

  • Ventilate the Mattress: After cleaning, place the mattress in a well-ventilated area or outside in the sun to speed up drying and eliminate odors.

  • Protect the Mattress: Consider investing in a waterproof mattress protector to prevent future accidents from soaking in.

  • Repeat as Needed: If the smell persists, don’t be discouraged—simply repeat the process until the mattress is fresh again.

Sleep Fresh and Odor-Free

With these simple and effective methods, you can easily get rid of pee smells from your mattress and restore it to a fresh, clean state.

Say goodbye to unpleasant odors and enjoy a good night’s sleep again. Don’t forget to share these tips with others who might be dealing with the same issue!
