These Are The Ideal Colors For Interior Doors

Think of every house or apartment you have ever lived in. How many of them had white doors? Our guess is the best. It is rare to find a door that has been painted a striking shade, a subtle neutral, or even left with a rich wood stain. It does not have to be this way.

Doors don't have to be relegated to a simple functional element, just to allow you to get in and out of a room, they can be so much more.

A door can serve as an attractive pop of color to draw you into a room or as a colorful surprise when you close it from the other side. It can be the finishing touch when it seems like something isn't clicking in a room and it can be the perfect space to work on a favorite color.

Here are five design experts in their favorite interior door colors and projects where they said "no thanks" to white and went for the bold, colorful color.

And yes, we have included a designer who has the right white for the times when white is right.

Always paint black

Dominique Gebru, interior stylist and content creator, recently completed a huge DIY home that included drywall, tile, and, yes, painting her interior doors. She opted for a sleek black that contrasts beautifully with her white walls, colorful book collection, and vintage rugs.

On the design and his journey through the trial and error of the interior door, Gebru says: "I tried a few different colors on the interior of the front door of our condo (mustard, dark green, white), but none seemed quite as satisfying of immediately black.

I just finished the One Bedroom Challenge in my own home and decided to add the same black paint to all the interior doors in the space, a total game changer. My grandmother had great taste, and her number one trick was 'paint it black', whatever 'it was'.

Gebru's Tip: Don't be intimidated by a bold color like black. "Black doors can add bold elegance and make a space look modern," she says. "It's a classic color for a reason."

Keep it white to make the room shine

There's a reason white is what you'll see in 99% of homes - it's classic and allows the rest of the room to take center stage. The trick here is, of course, to choose exactly the right shade of white.

Sanda Stojakovic from Design Playbook prefers to base her bold and vibrant designs with a peaceful Chantilly Lace white.

“I really love the bold colors and patterns in the rooms, so I kept the doors neutral white so as not to take away the star of the show. However, if it's a fairly neutral room, I like to use the door in a deep onyx color for some drama. "

Use a rich shade to draw the door as an architectural element

A door doesn't have to be an afterthought. With more than a few impressive and saturated doors in her repertoire, Marie Flanigan of Marie Flanigan Interiors advises: “Doors can serve as an attractive architectural element in a space. They are the first and last things you see when entering a room and deserve special attention. I honor them by incorporating unique silhouettes, painted in a deep, rich tone. "

This striking teal peacock adds a sophisticated sensibility to a Dutch hacienda-style door and classic white kitchen, but has also used color in monochromatic spaces where the walls, trim, and door are bathed in this deep hue.
