Ways to Hang Posters Without Damaging Your Walls
Framed or unframed, posters can be a great, easy, and affordable addition to your walls.
But to make them look their best, you have to make sure they hang the right way, and no, a few pieces of tape in the corners are not the best option.
So how do you hang the posters so they look good and stay in place? There is a way to make them look professional without drilling holes in the wall.
Throw the tape and pins out the window (okay, not really) and follow these best ways to hang framed and unframed posters without damaging the walls.
Step 1: prepare your poster
With clean hands, remove the poster from the tube and place it on a flat surface with the printed side up.
To remove corner wrinkles, weigh each of the four corners for a few hours, or more if necessary. Books, candles, and other heavy items around the room are plenty, just make sure they're clean.
If your poster is already flat, if it is made from a heavier material such as rigid plastic, or if it has a frame, you can skip this step.
Step 2: Choose your seat
Decide where you want to hang your poster. Anywhere is fine, but keep in mind that if your poster is hanging out of the way of direct sunlight, it will likely fade over time.
Note that you will be applying peel-off adhesive to the area of your choice, so do not choose a spot that is not smooth or has been freshly painted.
Step 3: Choose your membership method
You have a variety of options when it comes to removable stickers to hang your framed or unframed poster.
While standard clear tape is certainly the cheapest, it is not designed to be removable, so you risk removing paint from the wall with your poster later on.
For that reason, it's good to stick with adhesives that are specifically meant to be removed, as they are made with special formulas that will come off the wall much cleaner.
If your poster is unframed:
Use removable mounting tape (3M is a great choice), poster glue dots, or Scotch brand magic tape (not to be confused with regular masking tape), all strong enough to hold a frameless poster on the wall with a unique design to take off your walls. leaving no damage behind.
If your poster has a frame:
Because frames are heavier and more brittle by default, you'll want to use removable stickers that offer more strength than a strip of mounting tape.
Look for removable picture hanging hooks or universal hangers and make sure they are marked for "heavy use" on the label.
Tips for removing removable stickers
When it comes time to remove your posters, you must be careful not to paint the walls with them.
Fortunately, peel-off adhesive products are designed to do just that, although you may need to remove some of the latent sticky residues that remain.
See the specific instructions attached to the adhesive product you used for removal tips. Some removable mounting hooks, for example, have a flap that helps loosen the product from the walls.
Others you just need to carefully peel.
If you notice residue left, there are a few ways to get rid of it:
Tip#1 - Use vinegar and warm water: Make a 50/50 solution of white or cider vinegar and warm water in a spray bottle.
Spray on the remaining adhesive and let it sit for a few minutes, then use a soft sponge to gently wipe the remaining residue off the wall.
Tip#2 - Use dish detergent and hot water: Fill a spray bottle with hot water and add a few drops of dishwasher detergent.
Shake to disperse and spray the remaining adhesive. Wait a few minutes and use a soft sponge to clean up any remaining residue.
Tip#3 - Use a commercial adhesive remover: A product like Goo Gone Original can be safely used to remove adhesive residue from painted surfaces.
Spray, wait a moment to start work, then wipe gently with a clean paper towel. If you go this route, make sure the commercial product you buy is safe to paint.
