5 Adventurous Things To Do in Antigua and Barbuda

With its beautiful beaches, crystal clear waters, and tropical climate, the Caribbean is not always considered an adventure destination.

After all, most people who visit the region are more interested in sunbathing on the beach with a cold drink than in climbing a mountain or rowing a mighty river.

But as I learned on a recent trip to Antigua and Barbuda, adventure is everywhere, if you are willing to look for it.

Fortunately, with our help, you won't have to look far.

Here are our favorite suggestions for adventurous activities to do on these tropical islands while enjoying the luxuries you would expect from a Caribbean getaway.

1. Snorkeling and Diving

Like most places in the Caribbean, Antigua and Barbuda are great places to dive and snorkel.

With access to the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, there are several easily accessible coral reefs where visitors can observe thousands of different marine creatures.

Cades Reef is especially popular as it stretches for several kilometers and reaches a depth that is accessible even to novice divers.

And if you're into wreck diving, there are more than 127 documented shipwrecks offshore, and the three-masted merchant ship of the Andes is one of the most popular.

2. Kayaking and paddleboarding

Canoeing in the sea and paddle surfing are two other very popular water sports in Antigua.

Paddling through protected mangroves offers a great opportunity not only to observe wildlife but also to explore the unique ecosystem that surrounds the islands.

Mangroves help keep coral reefs healthy and vibrant and also provide a measure of protection against storms.

While in the water, rowers often see sea turtles, starfish, dozens of colorful fish, and a wide variety of other forms of marine life.

3. Swim with Stingrays

For a truly memorable experience, try swimming with the stingrays that make Antigua their home.

These funny social creatures seem drawn to humans, gliding through the water without the slightest sign of shyness.

You can pet the animals when they pass by or even feed them if you want.

There is nothing quite as exciting as watching these gentle giants float by your side as you glide across the surface, sailing on a yacht as you go.

This is definitely a must-see while visiting the island as it provides memories that will last a lifetime.

4. Climb Mount Obama

In 2009, Antigua changed the name from Boggy Peak, its highest point, to Mount Obama in honor of the President of the United States.

The 1,319-foot mountain can be climbed from both the north and south sides, and while it's not a technical climb at all, it can be a bit strenuous.

The views from the top are worth it, however, both the island and the surrounding ocean can be seen for miles in all directions.

5. Go Horseback Riding

Horseback riding is another popular tour in Antigua, mainly because it offers visitors the opportunity to ride horses along the beach and even in the crystal clear waters of the Caribbean.

Depending on your tour, you can even drive through some of the green pastures found throughout the island or climb the lush hills.

It is a serene and peaceful way to visit Antigua, allowing travelers to experience places that are far from the busy tourist areas.
