Free Things to do in Atlanta with Kids

Today we want to share with you something special:

Great parks and museums, and plenty of free things to do, Atlanta is the perfect family getaway!

You don't have to spend your budget to experience southern hospitality.

Whether you're looking for free things to do in Atlanta this weekend or planning trip months in advance, you'll find plenty of activities for all ages.

We have insider information on the best parks, museums, and more, and they will never cost you a thing. These nine places are all free, all the time.

1. Centennial Olympic Park

Built for the 1996 Olympics, the Centennial Olympic Park is home to the famous Fountain of the Rings, where children can play and families can enjoy free water shows, which take place four times a day.

Take a free audio tour or just stroll through the gardens to see some of the best group photos in the city.

2. Historic Fourth Ward Park

There's no shortage of fun, free things to do in Atlanta's Fourth Ward, and this park is one of the hidden gems of the ultra-modern neighborhood.

Explore its 17 hectares and you will find a sparkling lake, a new playground with a rope course and stone walls, a wading pool, and an abundance of green lawns for picnics and relaxation.

3. Blue Heron Nature Preserve

Discover the outdoor adventure in this wilderness area, located in the Buckhead neighborhood. Nature trails are free to the public year-round, so bring a picnic and let the little ones go wild.

There are wooden walkways, ponds, and forests to explore, as well as a butterfly garden.

4. Atlanta Monetary Museum

The whole family will feel like a million dollars visiting this free museum at the Atlanta Federal Reserve. Learn about the history of money, see millions of dollars being processed, and watch the robots work in the automated vault.

Your kids won't even know that they are studying together with all the fun they are having.

5. Fernbank Science Center

The Fernbank Science Center is always fascinating. The 9,000-square-foot showroom houses permanent exhibits like a living hive and reptiles (all secure behind glass, of course).

The lower level has space displays, including a collection of meteorites and an actual Apollo 6 space capsule. Visit the Observatory on Thursdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. to see the stars for free.

6. Capitol Museum

The golden-domed state capital is an essential stop for families looking for free things to do in Atlanta. Stop by the tour desk to pick up a Family Fun with Miss Freedom worksheet, which takes you through the museum with educational questions.

Or dive into exhibits on your own terms, inspecting flags, artwork, and other artifacts. It is never too early to inspire a love for history.

7. Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park

Kennesaw Mountain is an excellent option for a family day out. Start at the visitor center to learn about the park and purchase Junior Ranger brochures for children; they will receive a badge if they complete all activities.

Drive from Cheatham Hill to Kolb Farm to discover the park's history, then drive to the top of the mountain (or take the bus on weekends) for a great family photo.

8. Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site

Older kids will love the MLK Jr. National Historic Site Visit Fire Department No. 6, the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church, where Dr. King was pastor, and the beautiful World Peace Rose Garden.

Arrive early to sign up for a ranger-guided tour of Dr. King's birthplace; the tour is free on a first-come, first-served basis. For children ages 9-12, the Junior Ranger program is also available at this park.

9. Tiny Doors

Looking for kid-friendly activities in Atlanta this weekend? Go on a treasure hunt for the city's Tiny Doors! The gates are located on the other side of town, but the Little Five Points neighborhood is a great place to start.

Find the rainbow-colored door and the "puppy door", as well as a small cafeteria with a small mural. It's extravagant fun that the whole family will love.
