South Australian Wildlife Encounters

South Australia is an animal lover's paradise. Just a short drive from the capital Adelaide, you will have the opportunity to see wildlife in the air, on land, or at sea.

To the west, visit Port Lincoln, where you can swim with dolphins or dive with great white sharks offshore.

To the east, check out the fascinating mountain amphitheater known as Wilpena Pound, where you can spot the endangered rock wallaby.

You can also get up close to kangaroos and koalas in their natural habitats, or you can visit them in wildlife sanctuaries, where people work tirelessly to rehabilitate and care for injured or orphaned animals.

The wildlife of South Australia is adorable, diverse, and fascinating.

If your goal is to see various species of animals while traveling to Australia, this is the place for you.

These photos capture some of our favorite wildlife encounters in South Australia.

Cute Koalas

One of the best places to see koalas in South Australia is Mikkira Station, near Port Lincoln.

We were lucky enough to see this particular animal sitting up and alert, especially considering that koalas sleep 20 hours a day.

Yellow-legged rock wallaby

Kangaroos are closely related to the kangaroo.

The yellow-legged kangaroo, in particular, is included in the endangered species list, but you have a good chance of seeing this animal at Wilpena Pound.

Birds of prey

The Birds of Prey show on Kangaroo Island is a great way to get up close to many of South Australia's feathered friends.

All the birds in the show have been rescued and rehabilitated by owners Dave and Leeza Irwin; Dave is a cousin of the late Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin.

Kangaroo Sanctuary

Kangaroos abound in Australia, but sanctuaries still exist to help injured and orphaned kangaroos.

Visiting one of these facilities is a wonderful way to see these adorable creatures up close. If you go, like Dave in this photo, you will have the animals eating out of your hands.

Swim with the Dolphins

Swimming with dolphins at Baird Bay is an experience you will never forget.

These wild dolphins love interacting with people and when you jump into the water they are eager to play with you.

It is up to them how long they stay, but the more relaxed you are (and the more you twist and turn in the water), the longer they will be around.

Kangaroos

You can enter the Outback quickly from Adelaide, and the Gawler Range is a great place to see kangaroos in the wild.

Be sure to book a safari camp so you can also spend time exploring the land.

Great White Sharks

It's a two-hour boat ride from Port Lincoln to Shark Bay, where you can jump into a cage and snorkel with great white sharks.

In South Australia, clothing manufacturers attract sharks with music instead of enjoying the water (which they do in other parts of the world).

Casper the Owl

Casper is the name of a barn owl in the Birds of Prey show on Kangaroo Island.

When we visited, the audience called out the bird's name, took its head off the tree, and flew onto the stage. How beautiful!

Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary

The Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary is a place where you can take a koala walk.

Sanctuary staff place markers every day so you know where koalas have been seen before. Sightings are guaranteed.

Pelicans

At Kingscote Wharf on Kangaroo Island, you can watch a "Pelican Man" feed hundreds of pelicans, who visit the area every day for a snack.

Like clockwork, the animals fly every night in their feeding frenzy; a $ 5 donation will give you a prime viewing spot.

Kangaroo Island Seals

If you want to see seals in their natural habitat, there are a few different viewing opportunities around Kangaroo Island.

First, pinnipeds like to hang out on the rocks and arches of the Cape Willoughby lighthouse.

They also frequent the Seal Bay Conservation Area, where you can see them sunbathing or surfing the waves.
