Take a trip to Nevis for the Perfect Caribbean Escape

Today we want to share with you something special:

Adventures in the Caribbean: A Visit to Nevis!

If you are looking for the perfect tropical getaway, the Caribbean is always a great option. The region is known for offering travelers plenty of sunshine, gorgeous beaches, and gorgeous resorts where they can relax and forget about life for a while. But that doesn't mean there aren't a lot of things adventurous travelers can see and do there too, as we learned on a recent visit to Nevis.

St. Kitts' sister island, Nevis, is a bit different from other places in the Caribbean. However, this is simply part of its charm, as it is even more relaxed and peaceful than most other places in the region. With no large resorts dominating the shoreline and no large cruise ships stopping to take passengers to its shores, Nevis is a great place for those looking to get away from the crowds. On this island, you will have a more authentic and natural experience that combines history and culture in an integrated way.

Active Adventures

Walk the fountain trail

Nevis has several great hiking trails on the island, but one of the best is the Source Trail. It is so named because it takes hikers into the surrounding cloud forest and the island's freshwater spring. The hike is not particularly difficult, although slippery rocks and mud can make your balance precarious in places. The warm, humid forest is lush, beautiful, and home to much of the island's vervet monkey population, which you can see swinging through the trees from time to time.

The trail starts at the Golden Rock Inn and winds through a few small towns before entering the forest. Although the route is easy to follow and does not require a guide, for safety reasons it is a good idea to hire one.

Climb to the peak of Nevis

For a more challenging hike, consider climbing to the top of the Peak of Nevis. At 3,232 feet (985 meters), it is easily the highest point on the island. This trip definitely requires hiring a guide as it involves some steep climbs, scaling rough terrain, and even rope work. But the view from the top is spectacular and worth the effort.

We recommend that you contact Sunrise Tours to help you get to the top and down safely.

Riding a road bike

Nevis is a small island, only 93 km². This, combined with the fact that it is very bicycle-friendly, makes it a great destination to explore on two wheels. Traveling the 33km ring road that circles the perimeter of the island takes only a few hours to complete, but some of the views along the way are absolutely spectacular. On the one hand, you will find towering peaks that extend above your head, while on the other you will find white sand beaches with the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean lapping their shores.

Bike rentals are easy to find, but be careful. The highways have some serious hills at certain points that can take first-time travelers by surprise, including the infamous "Anaconda Hill" leading out of Charlestown.

Bike Path

Nevis is dotted with old sugar plantations dating back to the 17th century, and there's no better way to see them than on a mountain bike. The trails around the island are definitely not technical at all, making it easier for non-mountain bikers to accompany them on the ride. Again, there are some steep hills at certain points, but the payoff is worth the effort. We even rode through an open meadow surrounded by cloud forest as vervet monkeys darted from the grass to the trees. It was a wonderful experience, to say the least.

We recommend contacting Nevis Adventure Tours to schedule your tour.

Scuba diving and snorkeling

As with most of the Caribbean, Nevis is a great place to dive and snorkel. There are several dive sites a short boat ride from shore, with coral reefs, thousands of fish, and even a few wreck dives ready to greet visitors. Nevis' water is incredibly clear and calm, especially on the Caribbean side of the island, with depths ranging from very shallow to very deep. There is even a PADI gold certified dive center on the island that can provide information and connect travelers with guides.

Take a funky monkey ride

Another great way to explore the history and culture of Nevis is to join a Funky Monkey Tour. These 2-hour tours take travelers to some of the most remote areas of the island aboard a 4x4 vehicle. Along the way, you'll visit old sugar plantations, drive along beaches and through the cloud forest, before leaving the causeway to see some of the oldest historical sites in the entire Caribbean. If you are lucky you may even see one or two monkeys with the same name along the way.

Test your athletic ability

While the Nevis lifestyle is definitely laid-back and laid-back, that doesn't mean their endurance events aren't taken seriously. In October each year, the island hosts an annual triathlon that attracts athletes from around the world. And in March, swimmers took to the water to compete on Nevis all the way to St. Kitts Cross Channel Swim, which covers 2.5 miles (4 km) of open water between the two islands. Any of these events is a true challenge of dedication and endurance.

Where to stay

The Hermitage Boutique Resort

While Nevis isn't full of flashy resorts, it does have its fair share of amazing places to stay. For example, the Four Seasons has a charming hotel on the island, though those looking for a more authentic Caribbean experience may want to forgo that location in favor of the historic and absolutely beautiful Hermitage. Here, visitors will stay in quaint cabins that are as comfortable and cozy as they are unique and quaint. Situated in the hills above Charlestown, the Hermitage offers a quiet retreat from the city. Take a dip in the pool, dine in the restaurant and soak up the atmosphere of this family-owned and operated establishment. It's one of those lovely places that will stay with you long after you leave, and if you're lucky, you might even find a celebrity or two there.

Where to Eat & Drink

Golden Rock Inn

The aforementioned Golden Rock Inn is not only the starting point of the Source Trail but also a charming restaurant and bar. The delicious food, including fresh local fish, is accompanied by a beautiful atmosphere, which is simply charming at any time of the day, but especially at night. After your meal, be sure to take a stroll through the lush clothing that surrounds the venue. They are definitely worth checking out.

The Gin trap

One of the newer restaurants on the island, The Gin Trap offers a menu full of tasty dishes, including excellent steak and lots of seafood. In short, try the poached lobster and accompany it with one of the many cocktails that can be found on the menu. With 101 different types of gin to try, you're sure to find something to like here.

Bananas Bistro

Good Caribbean BBQ ribs? Who knows! This is just one of the many delicious dishes you'll find on the Bananas Bistro menu, combining rustic charm with great food and amazing drinks. Tucked away on the Hamilton estate (yes, that Hamilton), this is a wonderful place to have lunch or dinner when you want to escape to a quieter corner of the island. Save room for dessert, the banana crème brûlée is wonderful.

This is just a taste of what Nevis has to offer. I didn't even have time to mention the hot spring diving opportunities, for example, or that the island has its own trawl route. But that leaves you with a few things to discover on your own, which is one of the joys of the trip, after all.
