The Top 5 Things to Do in Switzerland

In Switzerland, there really is something for every type of traveler.

In a mere 16,000 square miles, the landlocked country manages to encompass a wide variety of settings: large modern cities; picturesque pastoral villages that have changed little in hundreds of years; and lakes and mountains that make up some of the most picturesque landscapes in Europe.

Beautiful, clean, efficient, and easy to navigate, Switzerland offers adventure and wonder around every corner, or on the other side of every mountain.

While narrowing down a list was difficult, here are 5 of our favorite things to do in Switzerland!

1. Cross the Alps on the Bernina Express

No trip to Switzerland would be complete without embarking on one of the most magical train journeys in the world.

The Bernina Express is part of the famous Rhaetian Railway, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008 for its engineering ingenuity.

The Bernina Express runs from Tirano, Italy, to St. Moritz, traversing the landscape as tourists flock to Switzerland in search of snow-capped mountains, glaciers, and picturesque Alpine villages.

Iconic red trains pass through the Poschiavo Valley, Alp Grüm, and glittering Miralago, to name a few destinations you'll see along the way.

Travel Tip: Going north, the right side of the train has the best views.

2. Hop on the tram in Zurich

If you fly to Switzerland, you will probably land in Zurich, the largest city in Switzerland.

Before heading out to explore the Alps, take some time to discover the many charms of the city.

Don't miss the medieval architecture of Zurich's Altstadt (Old Town), a scenic cruise on Lake Zurich, or the chance to sample some of the city's luxury chocolatiers.

Although the city can be expensive, one of the best (and cheapest) ways to explore it is by public transport.

The city has a huge network of trams that will take you almost anywhere you want, and the system is easy to navigate.

For the best value, buy a Zürich Card travel pass, which offers unlimited travel for 24 or 72 hours.

3. See Lake Geneva by boat

Lake Geneva is the jewel in the crown of Switzerland's many impressive lakes.

Not only is it the largest, but it also has one of the purest and cleanest waters in the world.

Lake Geneva, which spans the borders of France and Switzerland, is a playground for summer swimmers, with 116 public beaches for a (cold) swim.

The lake is best explored on a boat cruise, where you can enjoy the alpine views, medieval villages, vineyards, and castles that line the shores of the lake.

Most sightseeing cruises run from May to October and depart from ports such as Geneva, Lausanne, and Montreux.

The lake itself isn't the only star of the show - many cruises take place aboard Belle Époque paddle steamers, large vessels that evoke nostalgia for an ancient era.

4. Swiss Chocolate Happiness

If there is one delicacy that Switzerland is known for, it is chocolate.

This sweet delicacy has been produced in the country for centuries, thanks to Swiss chocolatiers who perfected the flavor using high-quality cocoa combined with Alpine cow's milk.

Some of the most famous chocolate brands in the world are Swiss, including Toblerone and Lindt.

However, if you are looking for something truly unique, visit some local chocolatiers to learn more about the production process, see how chocolate is made, and of course, enjoy some samples.

Some chocolatiers to visit include Auer Chocolatier in Geneva, Sprüngli in Zurich, and Maison Cailler in Broc.

5. Dip In Cheese Fondue

Chocolate is not the only national dish here. Switzerland is also famous for fondue and raclette, and you'll find them on restaurant menus across the country.

Served in a hot clay pot, the fondue is eaten with a long-handled fork and dipped in bread, apples, potatoes, or pickled vegetables.

The raclette, in turn, is heated on a grill and grated over the meat, potatoes, or bread.

Both serve for a delicious lunch or dinner, or an invigorating post-ski snack.
