Wine Wonderland Of New Zealand

New Zealand wineries are said to produce the best sauvignon blanc in the world.
And the moment we drank our first crunchy sauvignon blanc and grapefruit in the region, we knew we were trying something incredibly special.
We were so captivated by the wine that while we continued to drink prosecco in Piemonte, Malbec in Mendoza, and cava in the Costa Brava, we continued to enjoy New Zealand sauvignon blanc at our table more often.
Sauvignon blanc is not the only excellent New Zealand wine; the country produces an incredible variety of world-renowned wines.
With 11 major wine regions, more than 700 wineries and nearly 90,000 acres of vineyards in 2013, New Zealand is a global meeting place for wine tourism.
With so much to discover, knowing where to start can be overwhelming.

To make it easier, we focus on three easy-to-visit sub-regions that surround the largest city in the country, Auckland!
1. Waiheke Island
A quick ferry ride from Auckland's waterfront, just past the volcanic island of Rangitoto, you find yourself on bucolic and dreamy Waiheke Island.
With green hills and aquamarine bays, the island is best known for its red wines.
Despite being so close to the city, the island's climate is slightly warmer and even sunnier than Auckland, making it a perfect place to grow Bordeaux's award-winning varieties.
And the winegrowers of the region have the trophies to prove it.

Some of the best wines in the region include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and more.
Several wineries mix these varieties to create round and fruitful masterpieces.
2. West Auckland
World-famous chardonnays and cabernets are worth traveling long distances to taste.
The good news is that once in Auckland, you are only 30 minutes from wine districts like the Henderson and Kumeu valleys.
The volcanoes that gave rise to the region's famous black sand beaches also made possible the district's award-winning wines (it's all about the soil).
But the area's winemakers, including many Croatian immigrants, deserve credit for growing vines that produce rich and elegant merlots and cabernets, as well as delicately aromatic chardonnays.
For example, the carefully concentrated, mature Chardonnay from the Kumeu River wines owes its lovely hazelnut and peach aromas not only to the area's clay soils and ideal climate but also to the loving hand of its producers.

3. Matakana
Locals have known the wonders of the idyllic rural community of Matakana for years, but the secret has definitely been revealed.
Visitors to Auckland are now making a quick trip north to experience the area's mild climate and enjoy the spicy syrahs produced by local wineries.
Contour Estate, a boutique winery that makes an especially praised option, produces a tasty chocolate syrah with notes of smoke, black pepper, and bacon (yes, bacon) from the vines.
While wine is the most important vocation of mermaids, both locals and tourists are drawn to the central village of Matakana to cook with fresh farm produce and handmade goods.
Visiting the beautiful and diverse wine regions of New Zealand is a must for anyone who appreciates wine; It is an excellent way to get to know the country and the artisans who make these delicious libations.
