Cold weather

In the winter season, milder temperatures are forecast across the country. Although snow is rare in most parts of Australia, snow can be found in select locations.

Snow occurs in the mountainous terrain of the Snowy Mountains of New South Wales, the Victoria Alpine region, and the mountainous parts of Tasmania.

In Australia's northern tropics, the weather rarely drops below 24 Β° C.

Although most other areas rarely glimpse snow, Australian weather can have some dramatic drops during the day, so be sure to keep always some extra layers with you in winter.

The regions of Central Australia tend to remain relatively warm, with temperatures ranging between 18 and 24 Β° C.

When exploring Australia in winter, be sure to wear a jacket and scarf to cope with the breeze.

With the southernmost continental areas averaging 12-18 Β° C, Australia is more than bearable in most regions, although you may need a few layers and a hood for cooler nights.

More mountainous areas can drop as low as 6 Β° C. Note that these temperature ranges are based on averages and actual temperatures may be higher or lower on a daily basis.

Winter rains in Australia

Precipitation is generally quite low during a typical Australian winter, although millimeters peak in Tasmania.

Precipitation measurements average about 14mm in the Northern Territory, which is in the middle of its dry season, to 98mm in New South Wales and 180mm in Victoria.

The average rainfall in Australia in 2016 was just over 49.9mm.

Winter skiing

Australia's winters are perfect for anyone eager to tackle the mountain slopes.

With perfect terrain for climbing the mountain slopes and enjoying activities in the snow, the Australian winter is sure to be a memorable one.

Popular winter activities include skiing and snowboarding.

Hiking to the Snowy Mountains of New South Wales, the Highlands of Victoria or the Mountains of Tasmania, you are sure to have fun.

In the Snowy Mountains, the two main ski resort areas are Thredbo and Perisher Valley, which are close together.

Coming from the north, the trip to Thredbo and Perisher Valley begins in Cooma, on the Monaro Highway Highway, south of Canberra.

Head west on the Snowy Mountains Highway, making sure to turn onto Jindabyne Road and Alpine Way.

On the north side of Mount Kosciuszko, there are the Selwyn snowfields, ideal for families.

To Selwyn Snowfields, continue on Snowy Mountains Highway in a generally northwesterly direction, passing the town of Adaminaby.

From the south, it is the Princes Highway, the Monaro Highway, and the Snowy Mountains Highway to Cooma.

From the east is the Snowy Mountains Highway to Cooma, just north of the town of Bega, between Narooma and Eden, on the New South Wales coast.

A northbound route from the coast is from Batemans Bay on Kings Highway, then south on Monaro Highway.

Thredbo and Perisher Valley have fully developed ski resorts with accommodations in the resorts themselves or in the vicinity of Jindabyne.

There is no accommodation at Selwyn Snowfields. Although skiers can find a place to stay in Adaminaby, which is about 45 miles away.

In Victoria, the ski slopes are much closer to Melbourne compared to the situation in New South Wales. The main resorts are Falls Creek, Mt Hotham, Mt Buller, and Mt Buffalo.

Tasmania has ski slopes in Ben Lomond, Mt Field, and Cradle Mountain National Parks.

Indoor attractions during winter

Anyone who prefers to beat the heat during winter can enjoy many of the beautiful outback activities Australia has to offer.

As you explore the museums and galleries of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and other Australian areas, you have the opportunity to explore Australian culture and heritage.

The national capital of Australia, Canberra, has a lot to offer in winter.

There are plenty of theater offerings in Sydney, Melbourne, and other major Australian cities and towns, and plenty of little bars for anyone to feel comfortable with.

Of course, there is always the appeal of simply staying home, having a beer or glass of wine in cheerful company in front of a roaring fireplace.

Winter Events

The only national holiday in the Australian winter is the Queen's birthday party.

This holiday takes place on the second Monday of June in all Australian states except Western Australia.

  • While Christmas takes place in the Australian summer, the Blue Mountains celebrate their Yulefest in winter with Christmas in July.
  • In Australia's Top End, the Darwin Beer Can Regatta usually takes place in July at Mindil Beach.
  • Brisbane's great country festival, the Royal Queensland Show, also known as Ekka, usually takes place in August.
