How the Beanie Is Made

  1. Chain: the starting chain sets the height of the hat. Add a few inches to the nose-to-crown measurement, and more for a slouchy fit.
  2. Ribbed rows: rows of back loop stitches create the vertical ribs. Work until the piece is about 3 in shorter than the head circumference, because the rib stretches.
  3. Gathering the crown: slip stitches along the top edge help the crown gather smoothly, and then it is pulled closed.
  4. Seaming: the two sides are sewn together and the brim is folded up.

Finishing Touches

Leave it plain, add a pom pom, or sew on a faux leather label like in the video for a boutique look. Make a set in different colors for the whole family.
