Sixty-five percent of adults said investing in the stock market was scary or intimidating, according to a 2018 Ally Invest survey.

Among their fears? Making the wrong investment, trusting the wrong sources, or not having enough money to invest.

Whether you're a new investor confused about the best strategy for your fledgling portfolio or haven't made the investment leap yet, we help you with our pick of the best investing books for beginners.

The smart investor

Although Benjamin Graham's “The Intelligent Investor” was first published in 1949, much of its original wisdom is true, from the importance of investing in value and minimizing losses to resisting emotional decision making when navigating the markets financially.

However, the latest edition has been updated with data on modern markets, as well as comments and footnotes from financial journalist Jason Zweig.

It has sold over a million copies worldwide and has been endorsed by numerous publishing and industry experts, including Barron's.

How to make money in stocks

William J. O'Neil's bestseller "How to Make Money in Stocks" demystifies how to make money while investing, from choosing stocks that will go up in price to choosing the best bonds, stocks or ETFs for your portfolio.

The book even covers how to take current market trends and, of course, capitalize on them. O'Neil is the founder and president of Investor's Business Daily, a newspaper that covers finance, the economy, and the stock market.

How to invest in real estate

Investing your money does not always mean buying stocks or bonds. Real estate investing is another way to diversify your investment portfolio and make a profit.

That's where Joshua Dorkin and Brandon Turner's book "How to Invest in Real Estate" comes in; includes more than 40 personal stories of how real estate investors got big, offering advice on how to invest in real estate while working full time, strategies for building wealth through real estate investing, how to finance your real estate business, and even how to attract your spouse. The authors are co-hosts of the real estate podcast, "BiggerPockets Podcast."

The little book that is still on the market

"The Little Book That Still Beats the Market" is the aptly named updated version of Joel Greenblatt's "The Little Book That Still Beats the Market," which was first published in 2005 and has sold over 300,000 copies.

He explains to aspiring investors how they can consistently outperform market averages, using the author's very simple formula of buying stocks when they bottom out.

But don't worry, Greenblatt explains the concepts in simple, jargon-free terms. This version includes data on the financial crisis and the performance of the formula during that time.

The simple path to riches

If you've ever wanted his parents to teach you a little more about money, financial markets, and how they work, then "The Simple Path to Wealth" by JL Collins is for you.

This book began as a collection of letters to the author's daughter, but has grown into a comprehensive financial guide.

It includes topics like debt, how the stock market works, how to invest in a bull market and a bear market, how to navigate the many retirement funds out there, and even the importance of having money for yourself.
