5 TIPS for Keeping your Indoor Succulents Healthy

Indoor succulents have become one of the most popular houseplants because they’re beautiful, low-maintenance, and versatile.
Yet, many people are surprised when their succulents start stretching, wilting, or even dying despite their reputation for being easy to care for.
The truth is that succulents have unique needs that are quite different from other plants, and understanding these can make all the difference.
Below, we’ll explore five essential tips to help your succulents grow strong and healthy indoors, along with some bonus advice to take your care routine to the next level.
Light: Give Them the Right Spot

Succulents are sun-loving plants. Indoors, they struggle the most with a lack of light.
Place them near the brightest window in your home, ideally one that faces south or west.
Signs of light stress include elongated stems (etiolation), pale coloring, and leaves that point toward the light.
If your home doesn’t get enough sunlight, consider using a grow light for at least 6–8 hours a day.
Rotate your pots every few weeks to ensure the plant grows evenly, rather than leaning toward the light source.
Good to know: Some species like Haworthia or Gasteria tolerate lower light, making them excellent choices for apartments or offices.
Watering: Less Is More

The most common mistake with succulents is overwatering.
Unlike tropical plants, succulents store water in their leaves and stems.
Use the soak and dry method: water thoroughly until it drains out of the pot, then wait until the soil is completely dry before watering again.
During winter, succulents enter a resting phase, so they need even less frequent watering.
Check the leaves: plump means hydrated, wrinkled means thirsty, mushy means overwatered.
Tip: Always water at the soil level rather than misting the leaves to avoid rot.
Soil and Drainage: The Foundation of Health

Succulents hate sitting in wet soil.
That’s why choosing the right mix and pot is critical.
A good soil mix should contain sand, perlite, pumice, or small gravel to improve drainage.
Avoid heavy potting soil designed for standard houseplants.
Always use a pot with drainage holes, so excess water doesn’t stay trapped.
If you want to get creative, you can make your own mix: combine cactus soil with perlite or coarse sand for an inexpensive but effective option.
Environment: Create the Right Indoor Climate

Succulents are adaptable but still need the right temperature and humidity.
They prefer temperatures between 60–80°F (16–27°C).
Keep them away from drafty windows in winter and from heat sources like radiators.
Most succulents enjoy low humidity, so they usually thrive in average household air.
Good air circulation is important. If you notice fungus gnats or mold, the environment may be too damp, and it’s worth adjusting your watering or airflow.
Feeding and Maintenance: Support Their Growth

Succulents don’t need a lot of fertilizer, but the right nutrients can help them thrive.
Use a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half strength once a month during the growing season (spring and summer).
Remove dried or fallen leaves regularly to keep pests away and encourage new growth.
Repot your succulents every 2–3 years to refresh the soil and give roots more space.
If you enjoy propagating, try rooting a healthy leaf or stem cutting. It’s a rewarding way to expand your collection.
Growing Confidence with Succulents
Caring for indoor succulents isn’t just about keeping them alive — it’s about helping them thrive as beautiful, resilient plants that bring life to your space.
With the right light, careful watering, proper soil, and a little seasonal attention, you’ll enjoy healthy plants that last for years.
Start by adjusting just one aspect of your care routine — maybe moving a plant closer to the window or changing the soil — and you’ll soon notice how much happier your succulents look.
