How to Grow and Care Of Geraniums

No garden is complete without colorful geraniums, and they are so easy to grow that virtually any gardener can successfully care for them.
Native to South Africa, geraniums can be grown directly in the garden in USDA zones 8-11, where winters are mild, but they bloom even better when lightly rooted (well packed, like in a container) as long as they have good drainage.
Geraniums (Pelargonium x hortorum) are popular plants for garden beds but are often also grown inside or outside hanging baskets.

Growing geranium plants is easy as long as you can give them what they need.
How to grow geraniums
Depending on where or how you grow geranium plants, your needs will be slightly different. Indoors, geraniums need a lot of light to flourish, but they tolerate moderate light conditions.
They also need indoor temperatures of around 65-70 degrees F. (18-21 C.) during the day and 55 degrees F. (13 C.) at night. These plants should also be grown in well-drained potting soil.
When growing geraniums outdoors, they require moist, well-draining soil, similar to indoor potting soil, with equal amounts of soil, peat, and perlite.
Locate your geraniums in an area with at least six to eight hours of sunlight. Since these plants must be protected from the cold, wait until the threat of frost passes before planting.
Space the plants 20 to 30 cm apart and at the same depth as their original pots. Vegetable mulch is also recommended to help retain moisture.
Provides full sun
Geraniums need lots of direct sunlight to bloom well, so allow them to absorb these rays by placing them on the south side of walls, on patio tables, or as a highlight in sunny garden areas.
If you notice that your plant has stopped blooming in summer, don't panic.
Geraniums tend to stop blooming during especially hot weather, so move your plant somewhere where it will get some shade in the afternoon if you live in a hot climate.
Watch out for humidity
Although geraniums need moisture, they are likely to rot if the potting mix stays wet for too long. To avoid this, water only when the top of the soil is dry and make sure that moisture can easily drain through the holes in the base of the pot.
Also, geraniums are relatively drought-tolerant plants - they can survive a fair amount of neglect, but they should never be allowed to dry out completely.
Keep geraniums blooming
To keep your geraniums in bloom, remove used flower stalks periodically. To keep plants full, plump, and blooming, get new plants from time to time by trimming the ends of each stem with clean, sharp scissors.
Geraniums bloom best when lightly rooted, so place your geraniums in larger containers only when necessary and use a container only one size larger than the one above.
Geraniums are excellent feeders, so fertilize your plants in spring and summer with a balanced fertilizer, according to the directions on the product label. Stop breastfeeding in late summer.
Protect yourself from cold weather
Gardeners in USDA zones 8-11 can get away with just covering their geraniums on frosty nights, but everyone else should overwinter indoors.
Bring your geraniums indoors before the first hard frost and place them in a sunny window or let them sleep in a cool, dark place.
Beware of mites
Keep an eye on your geraniums during the winter for signs of mite infestation. You may notice dry leaves, cobwebs, or small spots that look like spiders when viewed with a magnifying glass.
Red mites are best treated early on, so act quickly once you spot the problem. First, separate the affected geraniums from the rest of your plants and treat them consistently and aggressively with neem oil.
Although it does not kill them immediately (it is not a poison), it will interfere with their biological systems, slowly eliminating the infestation. Soak the plant and topsoil for best results.
