How to Take Care of Gollum Jade Succulent

If you’re looking for a unique and low-maintenance succulent, Gollum Jade (Crassula ovata ‘Gollum’) is a true standout.
With its tubular green leaves that resemble little fingers tipped with red, this succulent adds a whimsical touch to any indoor or outdoor garden.
Native to South Africa, this jade plant variety thrives on minimal attention — but to keep it healthy and vibrant, it helps to know its specific care needs.
Understanding the Gollum Jade Plant
The Gollum Jade is a compact, evergreen succulent that can grow up to 90 cm tall and 60 cm wide.
Its finger-like leaves are glossy and thick, storing water to help it withstand drought conditions.
When grown under the right conditions, it produces clusters of small, star-shaped white or pink flowers in late winter or early spring.
This variety belongs to the Crassula family — close relatives of the traditional jade plant — and is often called “Trumpet Jade” or “Ogre’s Ears.”
It’s an excellent choice for beginners thanks to its durability and sculptural appearance.
Ideal Growing Conditions for Gollum Jade
Sunlight Requirements

Gollum Jade loves bright, indirect sunlight.
Place it near a sunny window where it can receive at least 4 to 6 hours of light daily.
Outdoors, it thrives in full sun but appreciates some afternoon shade in hot climates.
Insufficient light can make the leaves lose their red tips and turn a dull green.
Temperature and Humidity

This succulent prefers temperatures between 18–26°C (65–80°F).
Avoid exposing it to frost or temperatures below 5°C (40°F).
If you live in a colder climate, bring it indoors during winter or place it near a bright window where it stays warm and dry.
Low humidity levels are ideal; high humidity may encourage root rot.
Best Soil Mix

Well-draining soil is essential. A cactus or succulent mix works perfectly, or you can create your own blend using:
2 parts potting soil
1 part coarse sand
1 part perlite or pumice
A pot with drainage holes is non-negotiable to prevent water from sitting at the roots.
Watering and Fertilizing Your Gollum Jade
How Often to Water

Like most succulents, Gollum Jade follows the “soak and dry” method.
Water thoroughly, then allow the soil to dry completely before watering again.
During spring and summer, watering every 2–3 weeks is often enough. In winter, cut back to once a month or less.
Overwatering is the most common mistake — soft or mushy leaves are a sign that the roots are drowning.
Fertilizing Tips
Feed your plant once every two months during the growing season (spring through early autumn) with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength.
Avoid feeding in winter when growth naturally slows down.
Repotting and Propagation
When and How to Repot

Repot your Gollum Jade every 2–3 years or when it outgrows its pot.
Choose a container that’s only slightly larger than the current one, refresh the soil mix, and handle the roots carefully.
Propagating Gollum Jade

This plant is incredibly easy to propagate. Simply take a leaf or stem cutting, let it dry for a few days until the cut end forms a callus, then place it in well-draining soil.
Keep the soil slightly moist until new roots form — within a few weeks, you’ll have a brand-new plant.
Common Problems and How to Fix Them
Pests
Mealybugs and spider mites occasionally target jade plants.
Wipe the leaves with a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol, or spray the plant with a mild insecticidal soap.
Overwatering and Root Rot

If your plant’s leaves look mushy or translucent, it’s a sign of too much water.
Remove the damaged parts, let the soil dry out, and ensure proper drainage before the next watering.
Drooping or Shriveling Leaves
This usually means your Gollum Jade needs more water or sunlight. Adjust the conditions gradually to avoid stress.
Bringing Character to Your Succulent Collection
Gollum Jade is more than just a plant — it’s a living sculpture that brings texture and charm to any space.
With the right balance of light, water, and care, it can thrive for years and even become a small tree over time.
Whether you grow it indoors or outdoors, it’s one of those succulents that reward you with effortless beauty and resilience.
