Simple Trick to Prevent Birds from Hitting Windows

Every birder has heard the thud of a bird hitting a window, and even with the best preventative measures to help birds avoid windows, impacts are inevitable. But what can be done to avoid this?

Birds are smart about natural predators and obstacles in their environment, but they don't recognize glass as a solid surface and don't know it can be dangerous. Most of the time, window collisions happen because birds see multiple reflections on the glass and mistake those reflections for something real.

Reflective branches, for example, might look like a good landing spot, a feeding reflection might look like a tasty food source, or reflected clouds might look like a clear flight path. Even reflections from other birds can be confusing because the area beyond the glass will appear to be safe.

When birds are panicking, as if scared or chased by a hawk or cat, they are even more likely to crash into the glass, even if that glass has been treated or made more visible. In this video, you'll discover an incredibly simple trick to stop birds from flying into windows.
