String of Pearls Care

The String of Pearls (Senecio rowleyanus) is one of the most eye-catching succulents you can bring into your home.
Its cascading stems filled with bead-like leaves make it a favorite for hanging baskets, shelves, or any spot that could use a touch of green elegance.
But while this plant is stunning, it can also be a bit tricky if you’re not familiar with its needs.
With the right approach, you’ll keep your pearls plump, healthy, and thriving all year long.
Getting to Know the String of Pearls
Native to South Africa, this succulent naturally trails along the ground, rooting as it spreads.
Indoors, it becomes a dramatic hanging plant with vines that can grow several feet long. Its small, round leaves are designed to store water, which means it’s highly drought-tolerant but also sensitive to overwatering.
It even produces small, white, cinnamon-scented flowers under the right conditions.

Light Requirements for Healthy Growth
Your String of Pearls loves bright, indirect sunlight. A few hours of morning sun by an east-facing window is ideal.
Too much direct afternoon light can scorch the leaves, while too little light will make the pearls shrivel and the stems leggy.
If natural light is limited, a grow light can keep the plant happy and prevent weak growth.

Watering the Right Way
The number one mistake with this plant is overwatering. Since the pearls are designed to hold water, they need the soil to dry out between waterings.
Stick your finger about an inch into the soil—if it feels dry, it’s time to water.
During the growing season (spring and summer), watering once every two weeks is often sufficient, while in fall and winter, watering should be reduced to once every three to four weeks.
Always use a pot with drainage holes to prevent root rot.
Best Soil and Containers
A well-draining mix is essential. A cactus or succulent soil blend works perfectly, especially when supplemented with extra perlite or coarse sand to enhance drainage.
Avoid heavy soils that retain too much moisture.
When it comes to containers, choose terracotta or clay pots since they allow excess water to evaporate and keep the roots healthier.

Temperature and Humidity Needs
The String of Pearls thrives in average household temperatures between 70–80°F (21–27°C) during the day and no lower than 55°F (13°C) at night.
It doesn’t like frost, so if you’re keeping it outdoors in summer, be sure to bring it in before the weather gets chilly.
Average indoor humidity is perfect; no need to mist the plant.
Feeding for Better Growth
Feed your plant once a month during spring and summer with a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer made for succulents.
Avoid over-fertilizing, which can damage the roots and cause the pearls to drop. In fall and winter, when growth slows, skip the fertilizer.

Common Problems and Solutions
Even with good care, you might run into some issues:
Shriveled pearls → Usually a sign of underwatering or too much direct sunlight.
Mushy stems → This points to overwatering or poor drainage. Cut back watering and check the soil.
Leggy growth → Caused by low light; move the plant to a brighter spot.
Pests → Watch out for mealybugs and aphids. Wipe them off with a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol or use insecticidal soap.

Pruning and Propagation
Pruning helps the plant stay full and healthy. If stems get too long or sparse, trim them back and use those cuttings to propagate new plants.
Simply lay the cuttings on top of moist succulent soil, and they’ll root within a few weeks.
This is an easy way to create new plants for yourself or to share with friends.
Seasonal Care Tips
Spring/Summer: Active growth phase; water more often and fertilize monthly.
Fall/Winter: Resting phase; reduce watering, skip fertilizer, and keep the plant in a bright location.
