Why You Should Fold Your Fitted Sheets
Your current approach to "folding" fitted sheets may involve random folding until they fit in your linen closet, and that's fine, but you can do better. Folding your fitted sheets the right way is unlikely to change your life, but it certainly changes your linen closet.
The biggest benefit of folding fitted sheets is that folded sheets save space. Evenly folded sheets maximize space in your bedding storage area and maintain a neat and tidy appearance. Neatly folded sheets minimize extra folds and wrinkles, making hotel-quality sheets appear to have been placed on the bed. Plus, smoother sheets are more comfortable.
Finally, well-folded sheets give the feeling of a job well done. Of course, you don't need to fold the sheets with corners, but once you do, you can't help but feel proud of yourself.
Before You Begin
Before you start folding the sheet perfectly, make sure you have room to stretch out your arms! Your little linen closet is not the place to experience this. Also, make sure your sheet is clean and dry; A folded damp sheet will smell and get wet, and there is a chance that any other sheet nearby will do the same.
Step 1: Find The Corners
Most importantly first: find the four corners of the paper. Corners can sometimes "hide" in fitted sheets, so look for particularly angular pieces that stick out or try to find seams where the corners are sewn. Hold the paper so that two of the corners are close to your hands.
Step 2: Place Your Hands
Next, place your hands inside the top two corners, at the seams. The sheet should be on the wrong side and the inside of the sheet (also known as the mattress side) should now be facing you.
Step 3: Flip It Around
Now, take the end of the paper from your right hand and bring it to the left. Then take the right corner and turn it to the left. This top corner should now be facing the right side and the two corners of the sheet should be facing the left side. Adjust the two corners to align.
Quick Tip
If your right hand is not your dominant hand, you can change this process. Your right hand can be the hand that holds all the corners, while your left hand is the one that grabs and folds the sheets.
Step 4: Keep Tucking
Are you still with us? Well. Let's repeat the previous step, but with a twist! While holding the first two corners, find the third corner and place the other two corners on it. Your left hand should now hold three corners, all of which are hidden in the third corner.
Step 5: One Last Time
The tricky parts are almost done! Take the last fourth corner and bring it to your left hand, turning the corner over the others so that the fourth corner is no longer upside down. You should now have all four corners in one hand and the fourth corner should be on the top.
Step 6: Finishing Folds
After all four corners are hooked, you should have an L-shaped elastic line on the sheet. Lay the sheet on a flat surface, smooth, and fold the edges. Then fold it into the desired size and shape.
Another Way To Fold Fitted Sheets
If you have a large table or another flat surface available, try this TikTok method. This is what you will do:
- Arrange the sheet with the inside facing you.
- Place your hand on the outside of each of the bottom corners, pushing the corner seam out.
- Insert the lower-left corner into the upper left corner of the fitted sheet and the lower right corner into the
- upper right corner of the fitted sheet.
- Take the folded paper and shake it to make sure it is level.
- Fold the elastic part of the paper to create a rough square.
- Fold the top third down and the bottom third of the paper up, smoothing as you go.
Your role should now be long and narrow. Fold each side towards the center of the sheet, then fold it in half for a nice sheet that fits well.
Keeping Your Linen Closet Organized
Now that the sheets are neatly folded and put away, it's time to make sure the rest of the linen closet is organized. Follow some of these tips for a linen closet that will be in shape in no time.
- Keep similar items together. When organizing your linen closet, group similar items (by form or function). Your closet will be tidier and it will be easier to get what you need!
- Break out the baskets. We all have a small collection of stained towels and washcloths that are vital for cleaning up a mess, but far less desirable when it comes to seeing their worn and battered bodies on the shelves of your linen closet. The solution? Store them in some matching baskets! The baskets provide a much-needed visual and hide your pile of old towels.
- Don't forget the door! You're probably wasting your much-needed space in your linen closet and you don't even notice it! Use the back of the closet door to hang shelves to store extra towels or hang shelves to store toiletries and other small items.
