Mrauk-U

An ancient city of Rakhine largely forgotten by tourism standards (for now) is located in the northern state of Rakhine.

In addition to the Bagan, recently awarded by UNESCO, the main thing to do here is to explore the hundreds of temples within the archaeological zone.

Unlike Bagan, the terrain is rugged, more dramatic, and with a greener landscape, offering breathtaking views.

Most of the structures are within walking distance of each other, but a bike would not be a problem to see the full range of what is offered here.

The best way to get to Mrauk-U is to fly to Sittwe and then take a boat from the city to the Kaladan River.

Loikaw

Bordering Thailand, this Kayah state boasts stunning hilltop scenery, pagodas nestled in limestone mountains, and a rustic village feel that delights anyone who visits.

Many different tribal cultures live here, which makes the visit culturally fascinating, so it is best to start with a visit to the museum of local culture.

One of the most recognized tribes here is the Kayan, who in the past were known as "long-necked women" with bronze rings around their necks, a custom that is practiced much less today.

Be sure to try the local food as there are many unique dishes here that can be easily sampled at the daily night market.

You can fly from Yangon to Loikaw and then there is a short drive into the city.

Mount Victoria

Located in the Nat Ma Taung National Park in Chin State, Mount Victoria is Myanmar's third highest peak and is home to rare flora and fauna, earning it ASEAN status and World Heritage Park Outstanding Universal Value for the UNESCO.

Watching the sunrise at the top of the mountain is highly recommended, as well as a stay in the local villages of Kanpetlet or Mindat, where visitors can meet the indigenous Dai, Upu, and Ya, tribes.

If you are planning a visit, be careful as Mount Victoria is inaccessible during the rainy season, from May to October.

The nearest airport is Bagan, which is an eight-hour drive or bus ride from there to Nat Ma Taung National Park.
