What Can You Do With Used Compost? Here's The Answer

It's entirely possible to reuse old compost - books may say no, but they assume you have a lot of money / a car / easy access to a garden center. Of course, if the plant has died from diseases or soil pests such as vine weevil, it is best to send the compost elsewhere. But if it looks too tired, use it as mulch.

Scoop the compost around the roots and use it on top of other pots or plants in the garden. It won't be high in nutrients, but it will suppress some weeds and retain moisture.

Because it is made of organic matter, compost is always breaking down. Add lots of water and this decomposition process leads to compaction. In large pots, this can mean that the entire bottom half becomes very dense, with little or no root growth. If you only add new compost to the top, you are condemning the bottom half to a no-grow zone.
